Dang Duckie are you going in the Dog business or did you get rid of your other pup?

Only experience I have is with Jack Russells. One momma dog was awesome on a trail. Her son did not have as good a nose (or didn't use it properly) but was the most tenacious animal I have ever seen. Would tackle a 200 pound wounded boar hog without hesitation. Got him into trouble a couple times but, man, you had to love his heart.

I think all of the breeds mentioned above can work given the right instruction and time spent. Good luck with your choice.

Mike, you bought a pup? Slow down brutha, you don't need a full kennel to catch a couple of pigs.

The best dog breed for tracking is the best breed for you. If you get a dog that does not fit the rest of your life style, you will not be happy with it no matter how well it tracks.

Consider cross training that you may be interested in, the environment that you have to house it, your family situation and your personal preference for size, coat, color, what ever. Let that determine the basis for your search and narrow it down from there.

The best breed for me does happen to be the Lacy. I am also experimenting with 1/2 Pits and a Plott Hound. The Lacy/Pitt is a neat dog and working well. The Plott definitely has a superior nose but she does not really fit in either. I had a Red Bone who was a tracking machine and I got rid of him because he didn't fit ME...........

The best breed for Cotton or Kevin B is obviously the Wire Hair Dachshund...........

For you the best breed might be a Jack, none of us know.

another vote for Jack Russel! This is Lonestar, and he is a tracking fool! He is a South African Broken Haired Jack Russel. Mike Palmers BO X Bill Watsons Stinker what do you get? a whole litter of pups that track like crazy.

I got a lemon beagle that'll tear any kids toys and pair of sandals in 3 seconds flat. I want to try her out in the woods someday.

I bought a pup on sunday from a working litter. I have seen both parents hunt, very good dogs. They are 6 weeks right now and I am pretty sure one of the ten is still avail. If you want the contact number e-mail me. All the pups are going to working/hunting homes. They are reg. Lacy pups by the way.

Thanks, Mike I will email you. I am open to other breeds. Does anyone know of other breeders who breed specifically for tracking. I really am not looking for a hog catching dog, just one who could track a deer or hog. Of course I guess once they catch up with a wounded hog that might be a problem if they are not tough enough to keep it bayed up till you can finish it.

I have a rat terrier that I have been thinking about training to track. Any opinions on this? I know she is a squirel, coon, possum, rat or cat hunting fool..

I like lacies because they're versitile and easy to handle.

I failed to mention that the breed we use for tracking is the jagdterrier. We need a dog with enough grit to hold wounded hogs while we try to get in to finish them off. You wouldn't think a twenty pound dog could hold a 200 pound boar hog. Here she is posing with some dove she recovered after I dropped them in a woodlot. Fortunately she doesn't tear them up like she does the hogs! (too bad I can't say the same for my chickens though...)

Steve- I told Mike not to show me the pups. But, he did. I blame you anyways.

Sika- Thats not Ace is it?

Couldnt just about any breed with a decent nose be a good tracking dog?

                              Yep, that's the Ace man.

He's getting bigger but he's still going to be on the small end of the spectrum as far as lacies go. I'm thinking he'll top out in the 40-45 lb range. As far as disposition, he's a very happy guy and he's been an easy puppy to raise.

Fine, blame me then. Male or Female?

Just as important as nose is drive, tenacity, intent and focus...............
