Handload or factory? I handload. Nothing over 150 gr makes sense in a 308, I hunt with 150 mostly, 125 gr works fine too but the 308 was designed for a 147 gr bullet, pointless to shoot anything too far on either side of that.

I prefer Sierra bullets, Nosler works fine too (BT, not partition).

I handload all of mine. 165gr Hornady Interbond with 45.4gr H414. This is the best OVERALL recipe I have came up with for your kind of shot out of my Whetherby.

buy several brands 4 or five and see what it likes...the .308 was built from a 30.06...they do like 165gr. Mine like "out of the box" Federal premiums...my buddy likes the Hornady

Handload I use any from 125g-150g. and have great results. You can have just as much much speed (maybe more)out of a 125g Hornady BT at 125yrds than a 117g for a 25/06, that 308 will serve you will.
Factory loads? I would use the Hornady brand. That stuff is good.

If you are not going to hand load this is the ticket. Try different manufactures , you will probally go back to the Hornady Custom 150 SST. Just my .02 worth.

Another vote for the Hornady SST 150's

Best ammo off the shelf IMO.

Look at the Barnes vortex line. Great bullets and very accurate.

If you want to go that route, I usually shoot and clean the barrel every round for the first 10, the clean after every 2 shots for the next 10 and clean every 3 shots for the next 10. Just be careful cleaning your barrel, more barrel's are damaged by improper cleaning than anything else. I shoot the ammo I'm going to target shoot or hunt with for the break in. I really dont have an honest opinion if breaking in a barrel really does that much for you other than keeping copper from building up on the tooling mark's left over from the factory.
