Be careful. I did both of my 700's. One came out great...the other would snap the pin when you closed the bolt. It seemed to be either all or none....not very infinite adjustment.

I have done both of my guns, 2 of my dads, 2 of my older brothers, and 1 of my little brothers plus about 6-8 others and havent had any problems.1 of my guns and I think a freinds gun took awhile because of the firing when closing bolt but we finally got it down just a matter of getting the creep and poundage both in check.Think it more of the newer guns that you have to get it just right.

Remington had a recall on the model 700 a few years ago, because the gun would fire when the bolt was closed. I you have an older 700, gun shops are still honoring the recall and repairing the problen free of charge. They will also fix the gun where you can open the bolt while still in the safety position. Many older guns had to be switched to the fire position to open the bolt.

I suggest taking it to match grade or Pasadena gun center. both do excellent work.

I would suggest taking it to a gunsmith. When you blow your transmission out of your truck or WORSE, you will think twice about doing your own trigger work. Just my .02

It is my understanding that on the newer 700's, Remington covered the adjustment screws to prevent lay persons from adjusting them, gunsmiths can do it for you. Older Model 700's have these screws exposed. I don't know when the date is separating "new" from "old". I have one of the old ones and did the adjustments myself. One screw adjusts travel, the other weight of pull. Do be careful, you can get it set too lightly to be safe. When you do have it set to your preference, dab some clear finger nail polish on the screws to keep them from moving on you.

I think the Remington 700 is the best bolt action rifle ever made but the older models where the safety has to be off to work the bolt does have a defect of sorts. Its very easy to adjust the triggers but the trigger adjustment screws can loosen after a trigger job. Then when the safety is taken off the gun will discharge. This problem can also occur without a trigger job if the trigger is pulled before taking the safety off. Also a very light trigger job preformed in warm temperatures can fail when the safety is taken off during cold weather.

Gus Barber was killed by an accidental discharge of a Remington Model 700 rifle.

Had he lived, Gus Barber would have turned 10 years old this week. CBS News told you his story last February, just months after his mother's Remington Model 700 rifle discharged and struck him in the stomach.

For Barb Barber, it is a moment stuck in time.

"I pulled the safety off and it fired. The gun went off. My finger was nowhere near the trigger. I had an open hand," she recalled.

The remington triggers are pretty easy to adjust as long as you don't try to adjust it down to "hair trigger" status. Keep them over 1 lb. and they can be set really well. I did two last weekend.
