    Hunting Colorado... Need some help

Any you guys that are familiar with hunting Colorado ever hunt near Canon City? I have a friend with some property close to a town called Cotopaxi and and was needing some info about hunting that area. It is about an hour and 15 minutes southwest of Colorado Springs.

    Thanks,

    Alan

Never hunted there but have driven through Cotopaxi several times (summer and spring). I have seen several mule deer in the area and it is very rugged/hilly.
Looks like a great place to hunt.

That's probably Unit 58 which I think is OTC. They have good bulls in that unit....300" is not uncommon.

Saw a bear there last year about a half mile behind the gas station.

We hunt about 15 miles north of Cotapaxi when we draw. What unit are y'all in 57/58?

This property is a little south east of cotopaxi. I think it is unit 86 or 691.

Decent units, not a lot of BIG bulls, but some nice 5x5s and 6x6s in the area. It's pretty steep country and to find elk you're going to have to go UP. We found 'em last year about 11,000 feet during 2nd week of season. There are LOTS of elk in area, so if you don't mind shooting a cow, shouldn't be too hard to get into 'em. 86 has gotten A LOT better in the last few years, not really sure about 691.

We hut outside of Westcliffe in the San Gre's. Cotopaxi is not too far from there. It Is tough hunting and very steep and thick. If you catch the rut right you got a good chance of scoring an elk. We will be ther the last week of archery elk.

                      Spot on assessment right there.

I hunted 86 two years ago, plenty of elk and plenty of UP!
Saw a bunch of elk 2 miles from the nearest access point above timberline, seemed like 2 miles was the number...any way we headed, after 2 miles we saw elk. I called in a couple cows one day and while waiting on my hunting partner to shoot one had a bull come in downwind and then spook. He was at least a 5x5, possibly a 6x6.....hard to count points while they are running away through the woods.
