    V-Max on hog?

I was thinking about doing some reloads for .223 using 55gr V-Max bullets for a hog hunt. V-Max bullets are a thin jacketed bullet that are very explosive when hitting a target. My thought is that even though it has low penetration it will dump all its energy inside the hog creating a huge wound channel. I think it will be great for a behind the ear shot but was wondering what yall though about a heart lung shot. Has anyone used these on hog before? Normally I use 65gr Sierra Gamekings for hog and deer and they work great but I am out, and the only other bullets I have on hand are 69gr SMK's and 75gr Hornady Match.

If you think the hog is wearing its heart on its sleave they will work. If you are training a tracking dog it will work. If you want them DRT then you better shoot em behind the ear. That vmax will not likely even get inside a decent boar hog.

Those bullets are made for yotes, cats, rabbits etc.

Go with the a-max instead. That is not a hog round.

I like the vmax for hogs. Shoot em in the ear or the head, and they will drop.

^^One shot in the head, the other shot through the shoulder.

Wouldnt be my first choice of a rd preference for hogs.If you stick to the ear or just behind the ear shot then they will be just fine..but they will lack the penetration needed to kill any hog of size(ie 100 +lbs)Buy some more Gamekings. They are a well constructed bullet and will get the job done.

im a firm believer that its all about shot placement. This is how I learned, this is how i teach my cousins and new shooters. it doesnt truly matter WHAT you shoot em with, its WHERE you shoot em.

But i will contest, if you are not sure, go with another round. These things explode once they hit something. The inside of this hog on the right was destroyed.

I wouldn't. I'm tired of arguing about it.

Shot placement for sure is a big factor. I know guys that use the vmax on deer and it just drops them since it blows up right in the center of their chest cavity. I just wasnt sure if they would make it far enough in on a medium sized hog.
