Last night I was talking to my uncle who lives in Oregon and he is very interested in coming to Texas to hunt pigs (with a rifle). I told him that I've been finding places in central Texas with paid hunts. He told me that Oregon has passed a law that makes it illegal to charge people to hunt wild pigs. The thinking is that they are a nuisance animal and the state wants to discourage people from making a business out of it. The fear is that if people start making money off pig hunts, then they might actually encourage the growth of the wild pig population.
I can't see something like this working in Texas (even though I'd kind of like it to be that way). Texans are big on the rights of property owners and I think there would be major heartburn over this kind of law. Maybe if the law protected the landowner from any liability and a few other provisions to shield them from any harm; but I doubt it. Even with those protections, I'm not sure how it would work and I wonder if landowners would even bother to allow pig hunting if something like this happened.
What do you guys/gals think of this? Has anyone brought something like this up in the last few legislative sessions?
