    Question for the vehicle mechanics...

My son has a 1992 Chevy 1500 pickup. It was his grandfathers before he got it. It starts up fine but after running awhile it shuts down. After a few minutes it will start up again and run for a while then shut off. It seems like once it reaches a certain temp it dies. then after a few minutes of cool down it starts again. Anyone have a ny ideas????

Pop the fuel cap off and go for a drive, could be vapor locking. I recently fought this. Diagnose it and don't throw parts at it, I spent a small fortune throwing parts and it eneded up being trash in the tank. Pretty easy to Figure out, after it shuts off and wont start check to see if it's firing, if it is hook a fuel pressure gauge to it and tape it to the wind shield. When it shuts off the fuel pressure may go to 0 and if so thr is your problem. Fire fuel and compression are all you need. Compression is ok so either fire or fuel. I thought my problem was electrical, and after I replaced EVERYTHING it could be I enstalled a new fuel pump, filter, lines and a carb and intake. I ended up with a sweet running rig and it's in perfect shape but all it needed was the tank cleaned and a fuel pick up screen

My son had the same problem with his 99 Tahoe. After several months of trial and error it turned out to be the fuel pump. After running awhile the pump pressure would drop below 50lbs and shut the engine down.
May not be your problem but you might want to check it.

I had similiar issue in my 89 chevy. Replaced the fuel pump a year before but we pulled tank anyways. Turned out to be a cut hose inside the tank. Replaced and was good as new.

Yes, the first place is to check the fuel supply in the tank. Very common to have the pick up screen to clog and cause this very same symptom. I am assuming that it doesn't die on him while it is just sitting at an idle.

I had the same truck and it did the same thing, as most have already said check the fuel pump, only down side to this is it is in the gas tank. And its not that hard to do just get a good floor jack and some ply wood 3x3 should do the trick, droptank and pull the pump up, be careful of the wires. Hope this helps.

Thats right, it only dies on him when he comes to a stop at a red light or stop sign etc...so far it hasn't happen while actually driving.

I'd replace the fuel filter first. Cheap and the easiest to try first.

                  Check the throttle position sensor.

My guess is the fuel pump...put a gage on it nad check the pressure...I think you will find that the pump is wore out and when it heats up the pressure drops off...the only way to find out is to install the press gage....

does it idle roughly or high at times? have you happened to check the EGR valve. running fine while riving then coming to a stop and dying sounds more like a vacuum leak than a fuel problem. you would get hesitation on acceleration from TPS and fuel pump. Sounded like a coil could be bad, too, with the cool down period. early 90s trucks were notorious for bad caps and rotors with corrosion fungus looking stuff, but that caused misfires and hesitation as well. Any check engine light while running?
