I am a user of CAD since like 2002 do not use it very much not my main job i wear many hats. My boss loves some drawings done by a guy who uses Solid works. Never really done any 3D drawings just touched base with them in school and our company does not have to have them. Yes they would be nice but they take time. So what are my advantages if the company decided to go the Solid Works way. Cost, time etc. Seems like if i learned 3d in Regular Cad i could produce the same drawings with out the cost of new programs. Right now we have CAD2011 Mechanical i really only use the CAD 2010. Please chime in i am about to go back and take some refresher coarses.

I mainly use Auto CAD 2010 LT but for visual purposes to help us as well as the client understand scale, proportion, roof slops, etc. we use Sketch Up. You can import 2D CAD drawings into it which allows you to create your 3D visual. A very inexpensive tool for illustration and much easier than VIZ, etc.

I have not really played with CAD 2011, as we use CAD 2K10. I have not done 3D in AutoCAD since Autodesk brought out Inventor in roughly 2000.
I will tell you this, doing 3D drawings in a program like Solid Works (or Inventor) is 100 times easier than it is in AutoCAD.
The biggest difference between the two programs is with Solid Works (or Inventor) you will have two differnet files. One is a "part" and the other is the "drawing". You can not have a drawing without the part, but you can have a part without a drawing. In AutoCAD, you only make the drawing, without needing the "part".
This gives you the ability to have a completed project, that you can fully see in 3D and turn around before you start to make a drawing.
I use both AutoCAD and Inventor (this is the same thing as Solid Works, only a different manufacturer) on a daily basis. I grew up using CAD, but have since gone to only using CAD for quick layouts and minor things as the company I work for has gone to strictly 3D work.
