    Boy Scout Camp

Not sure how many on the green screen have boys in scouts or were scouts growing up but I seen some cool things this past week.

First we have a young troop with most of our boys in the 11 year range and only a couple at 14 my oldest son being 13 and youngest 11.

We went from 5 boys to nearly 30 in a couple years and are proud to be working as a boy lead troop.

What was neat this week was seeing some of these young boys turn into young men! Many had never been this far away from home and the first few nights we had some in tears wanting to go home. They all made it through the difficult night each would have and almost like breaking a horse they were different young men the next day. This was the first time we had traveled far enough that is wasn't an easy "pick up" if mom was contacted.

We were also left in charge of another troop that had a boy break down one night early in the week. His dad a former NFL lineman showed up for the Friday night ceremony with an impressive young man that could have then left a day early but wanted to stay another night so he could qualify for Order of the Arrow status qualifications!

Make a long story short these 4 young men fought their fears and the next day were now young men! All of them wanted to stay another week when the end of camp was near!

I was also proud of my 13 year old and one of his friends that signed up for an extreme aquatics adventure. They were taken out of camp Tuesday morning and didn't make it back to camp till Friday evening with no outside contact and weathering two thunderstorms (we were in northern Arkansas).

I was anticipating seeing my son's reaction when they returned thinking he will be ready to call it quits as he has been struggling dealing with younger scouts (for 13 he has really matured both physically and mentally). Late Friday evening walking through the woods to mess hall I saw him and the other boy walking our way and he had a huge grin on his face! He told me it was the best decision he had ever made and told me he wanted to run for senior patrol leader! The other boy would not have made it not for my son. He comes over to my house many time with other boys and never makes it through the night (in my camper or in a tent) without coming inside. He also wanted to run for SPL!

Yep, the week was hot and lasted 7 full days but it was worth it.

For all you guys donating your time to these young men, special thanks although like me I think you see the great things that come from scouting!

    Congrats!

My son was a SPL, Order of the Arrow, completed all three high adventures (boundray waters, sea bass and did Philmont twice) and made Eagle while being the SPL for a troop of 50 scouts. Being a scout helped make Noah what he is today....(now a Sr. at A & M and will be taking the MCAT this fall for admittance into Med school). Scouting rocks!!!!

I got to go on the sea base and philmont trips .... Seabase was unbelievable! We sailed the islands in the Bahamas for a week in a two masted wooden schooner. Philmont is brutal on a an old guy. Get in shape and be preparted to carry a 45-50lb pack all week.

My husband, bless him, was an Scout Leader for many years, complete with taking vacation time to attend several Scout Camps, including the 10 day trek at Philmont, plus teaching several Scout Merit Badge classes.
Our son achieved Eagle Scout rank just after he turned 15.
Neither would trade a second of that time together.
I get choked up about it, thinking back.

We have two sailboats donated and will be starting a Sea Base Group soon as well.

Wonder if a 50 can make a 50 at Philmont!

Thank goodness for the Adult leaders of my Troop and those leading my son's Troop now. As a young man, Scouting took me on adventures all across the United States - the National Scout Jamboree, Philmont three times and summer camps every year. Great times. Eagle Scout, OA, OA Ceremonial Team, three palms.

Adult leadership in a Scout Troop is absolutely about the most unselfish thing you can do to help grow boys into young men. I know it is different know, but the basic core principles remain the same.

I have twin boys in troop 545 in Arlington. They love it! It was cool to go on the campouts and watch them take charge and do things on their own. We are a true boy lead troop.

My son is a Life Scout and working on his Eagle. We did Philmont last summer - great experience!

As mentioned above, Scouting is a great opportunity and I encourage anyone to give it a try. Don't stand on the sidelines....get in the game. Scouting really needs adult volunteers.

It's always good to hear Scouting stories. Scouts was a huge influence in my life, and I was very active until I went off to college. I got my Eagle at 15, so did my brother (mom and dad's rule before getting a driver license). Dad got his Eagle back in 64 or 5. I went to Philmont, served a couple of terms as SPL, was active in OA (Brotherhood member, chapter chief, ceremonies team, etc). I served on summer camp staff at Worth and Leonard, went through aquatic school (I was ship captain) and basically did everything I could to get every experience possible. I regret not ever making it to Boundary Waters or Sea Base, both sure sound like fun.

I was in Troop 68 in Arlington.

Spent five BSA summer camps at Camp De Soto in South Arkansas, about seven miles from the Louisiana border. My son just did a three day camp last month for Webelos up at Pottsboro (don't remember the camp name). My wife is the den leader otherwise I would have volunteered to go but we couldn't both go (daughter).

It's funny that my deer leases are less than half a mile from Camp De Soto's border.

I had a great time in BSA growing up. (1377 in Kingwood)

Eagle Scout, OA, Philmont for "both" 50th anniversaries. I think the first was the acquisition of the ranch and the second was the operating anniversary.

At the time, I would have never imagined how close the scouting mirrors the operation of a business and the leadership, team building, and problem solving skills learned in Scouting have been immeasurable.

All of the above EXCEPT Order of the Arrow.

One of life's ironies, I guess.

VorTexan, if you get the chance to go to Philmont, do it!
