    Football helmet question

My son has a white Schutt helmet and this year Pop Warner decided to switch the helmet colors to Black.I really don't want to spend the money on new Black one. Can I repaint his white helmet black? If so is there any prepping to do i.e sand, prime, paint, clearcoat.

You could repaint it, but I don't know how long it would last. Some of the schools that I worked for in the past used to paint their junior high helmets (budget constraints and all), but the paint always chipped pretty easily.

yep, we repainted the helmets every year when I was in highschool. 2A school with poor booster budget. lightly rough the surface and paint away. You will need to touch up during the year as it will start to show scars.

So I don't need to prime it?

I wouldn't think it would make that much difference on a plastic surface like a helmet.

Rustoleum makes a spray paint for plastic. Supposed to bond with the plastic on a "molecular Level". I just know it seems to work pretty good. About 5 bucks a can at HomeDepot.

Repaint the scars? Badges of honor from sticking your head in the pile--leave 'em alone!!!

Use a coarse steel wool and then paint with the rustoleum for plastic.
