True, that and the Chicken Soup for the dog lover's soul is made by Diamond and is a good food

Not arguing with you but don't they also donate a lot of money and sponsor a lot of what vet's do? It doesn't take a degree to read a label and know that the first ingredient I don't want my dog eating is corn meal. Please don't take this the wrong way but every vet I know reccomends Science Diet.
My bag says the first ingredient is lamb.

i found this quote from his guidelines on how to read pet labels. He is completely wrong how to interpret a pet food label.

"An adult maintenance food is only suitable for non-reproducing adult dogs with normal activity levels. This same dog food may not be appropriate for growing, reproducing or working animals.

On the other hand, any product described as acceptable for “all life stages” must meet the more stringent growth and reproduction profile."

He is completely wrong. "all life satges" means the food is formulated rather than feeding trial tested. Feeding trials are far btter way to evaluate food than formulations. Not many companies do fedding trial since they cost anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 dollers to do.

I wouldn't trust anything on that site.

mine eat blue buffalo wilderness, had them on nutro before. one got real seick and seemed to be a food issue prolly table food or somehting he got out of the trash(panreatitis)even thought that was a decent food we switched to blue buffalo after the vet reccomended a few this being one of the best 2 we looked at. its about twice the price.maybe a little more but my dog doesnt seem to eat quite as much of it. vet said because others have so many more filler when we switched dog would eat less and its true. coat looks amazing and no health issues what so ever. Even gained a few pounds ( very active and have always had trouble keeping weight on him) its the thin lean bird dog in him

I don't make a dime by recommending science diet. I do because it benefits my patients. its the only food I feed my dogs. For your information you do almost need a degree to decipher the joke that is pet food labels. It is very easy to manipulate pet food labels ingrediants lists. I little fact for you. There are no dry dog foods where the Meat is the main ingrediant. They make it look so by showing it first on the list by using its wet, precooked weight. if you look at meat weight post cooking and dry it is a long way down the ingrediant list.

this site does a pretty good job of explaining pet food labels. Read this and you will understand why I think you need to almost have a degree to understand pet food labels.

Just curious, do all those vets also SELL Science Diet?

Purina Pro Plan is the best IMO. Purina One a close second.

There are only a few dry dog foods worth letting your dog eat... we never let our dogs eat dry food. Dry food is what causes all of their teeth problems! How many wolves do you see eating kibble!

Our dogs get grilled steak, grilled chicken, hotdogs, fish, venison... If I kill it and bring it home the dogs have their portions set aside, they eat 2 meals a day with the rest of the family (not at the table, but at the same time). I don't eat venison, so every deer I kill is ground up for dog food, hogs too. My labs get duck once a month, I don't like to share my ducks. It's best to make your own food and never feed your dogs dry kibble, their mouths aren't designed to eat that stuff. Our vet has been advocating this for years.

Granted it was nearly 20 years ago at A&M, but I helped do a study of about 20 major brands including Science Diet to check label consistency. Believe it or not, Ol' Roy was the most consistent we tested. It's amazing how many 20% protein foods would actually range from 16 to 25. After graduation, I went to work for Texas Farm Products (Lonestar Feeds) making Dog Food. Nearly all of the Precise was sent to Japan because they were paying almost $100.00/bag for it. Some of the lower end Lonestar and Hytop brands we made were nearly identical to the Precise at a fraction of the cost.

I don't know much about wolves, but I don't think very many live into their teen years. I also have never examined a wolf's teeth so I don't know if they are good or not

I feed what my dogs like. They have good shiny coats, lots of energy, and have had no health problems their whole life. My old dog gets Purina One and the younger one gets Dog Chow. I tried Diamond and all they did was fart and poop. Their coats got dull too. I was surprised b/c it was so much more expensive. I have never heard a vet recommend Science Diet, although many do recommend Hill Prescription Diet. I have always heard the SD and Eukanuba were poor choices but they had a great marketing plan!
