    Questions for the LEO's

Since getting out of the Marine Corps I have been trying to decide a career route - I am currently working for a family business but I don't know if it is something that I enjoy enough to make it my "career". I have always considered law enforcement but have always been a little "gun shy" because of the stories you hear about divorce rates and it being difficult on the family etc. I got out of the Marine Corps in large part because I wanted a family and wanted to enjoy my family - I had almost 20 months in Iraq by April 2005 so I knew the family life I was looking for would not be possible if I stayed in, so I got out. Now that I am nearing 30 (currently 27) I am really starting to consider a career change and becoming a LEO is what I consistently turn back to.

So, having said all that is a career in Law Enforcement very difficult on the family? Are the divorce rates really as high as I have heard (60-70%)? What advice would you give someone who is considering a career in law enforcement?

I live in Mckinney and would like to work in this area - Frisco, Mckinney or Allen but neither are hiring right now. I have thought about going through the part time academy that the local community college offers and get TCLEOSE cert. - it's about 10 months long and I am wondering if that would be the recommended route or if I should just wait till the dept. that I would be interested in working for is hiring?

Any additional advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I started when I was young and didn't have a family (yes wife....no kids) so evening shift and night shift was no problem for me.

With children, the whole game changes.

Would i want my son to get into law enforcement.......NO??

You gotta have a strong wife and a strong and you gotta be able
to fight temptation. Been married 15 years and been a cop longer
than that. Good luck. Goto a department that will pay for
          your training

Going to a department that will pay for your training is obviously a better option money wise. A lot depends on the hiring practices of the department(s) that you want to try for.

When we give a civil service test, the department usually (at their discretion) gives preference to people with a license, even if no experience. The decision for the department is putting someone on the street next week as opposed to waiting 6 months or more for the next academy to graduate and then paying the salary of someone sitting in class.

It all depends on where you apply. With a license military experience and a family, someone like you would be at the top of our list for consideration. At other agencies having a license prior to application might not mean anything.

You need to do some research and try to ride with some officers if at all possible.

I know lots of guys who have been or are getting a divorce who I either went to the academy with or currently share a beat with. I cant lie my wife and I went through a tough time a few years ago. Some say it was the "7 year itch" some say it could have been job related. I can honestly say I know more guys who have been married 15+ years who are deputies than ones that get the big D. I finally got decent days off (fri/sat) after 11 years and thats helped tremendously, I still work 3p-11p. Cant do nights and not enough time to make it to days

ALLLLL of the guys I know who are losing/lost a wife and family did so cause they couldn't keep their ****** in their pants!!!

Moral of this story is STAY AWAY FROM THE DISPATCHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Likewise, I know a lot of officers that have been married for a long time but also seen a lot of divorce.

The question that I have is what percentage of the population gets divorced? I would figure that it is currently 50% or more. Saying that a person who is a cop is likely to get divorced is like saying that to the general public.

X2 on the dispatchers. Seen a few go that route to the end of a marriage including the dispatchers ending theirs.

Might be better to go to a larger agency where the dispatch/communication center is not housed in the same building with the cops.

Relationships and marriage are what you make of them.
I've been in L/E for over 15 years now and happily living with the same woman for longer than that.
Not speaking for all situations, but alot of the stereotyping you hear about is officers using their occupation as an excuse for their infidelity.

That is exactly why I am wondering what the divorce rates for the general population is as compared to cops. It is an easy excuse for sometimes stupid behavior.

I love it better than any job I've ever had. My only regret is that I didn't get into it 20 years earlier. I've been married to the same woman for almost 39 years. I don't think there is any job that could come between us.

For financial reasons, hiring on with a department that will pay for your academy training is a plus, but as mentioned above - you might get better consideration if you are already licensed. Military experience is gonna be a big plus for you regardless.

Allen is one of the better paying departments anywhere in the state. You'd do well to get on there.

                      Good luck and stay safe.

I will tell you 6th street in Austin has gotten more than dispatchers around here. I worked down there often and it will test your strength

Temptation is everywhere. If you are going to stray, you are going to stray. Been in the business going on 18 years, it has it's moments where it's the best job in the world and then the worst job you could imagine. You have to weigh the pros and cons and see what you really want. It's not for everyone that's for sure. Sometimes you just don't know until you do it. I got my license and became a reserve for a little while and decided I wanted to do it for real (at age 35). Not saying I would not do it again, might go a different route, maybe to a state or federal agency. Good luck if you decide to go for it, no shame if you don't. Thank you for your previous service.

leo changes your life the way you act and view things. as well as the marine corp did i'm sure. i've heard stories and know people with a list of exwives. what was suggested to me was meeting that someone after you been a leo for awhile so they don't get affected by the change. i've been a leo since 08 and i'm gettin married in november this year. i have my concerns but i'm pretty sure we can make things work. mostly because she knew me after the career started and we share the same religious views. we're also madly in love so thats a plus. if 2 ppl love each i'm sure they can make it work regardless of a career. my $0.02 worth.

                            Good luck!!
