I'm new to bowhunting but not new to hunting. I'm also in Round Rock. I consider myself very fortunate to have had a dad that took me hunting every possible chance he could. I lost him just this past April and needless to say this season will be hard. I can think of no better way to honor him than to share our love of the outdoors with others. HighHandicap, wizardofhaws, come October I'd love to take you to a small lease I have in Johnson City. Can't promise any size, but I can promise that you'll see deer, and will have a great shot at putting some meat in the freezer. PM's on the way to both of you.

How does an adult learn to hunt?

I also "learned" to hunt in my early 30's. I guess the intro I had was plenty of experience with firearms, having shot competitive pistol, with some success, in college. I also have had a long time interest in archery since I was a kid, but never had the means to support my latent addiction. Fast forward to my early thirties, and I started to work with people that hunted, so I had some opportunities to go dove hunting around 2000 and 2001. Taking and academic approach to most things in life, I would read, study, observe, and listen to anything related to hunting; biology, zoology, botany, meteorology, history, topography, and technology. I got on a deer lease in 2004 and shot my first deer that November, shot my first archery deer in November of 2009, and my first archery turkey this Spring. I am now really enjoying archery and bowhunting, and with the help of some excellent online resources, including some of the posters here, I am making my own strings, fletching my own arrows, and tuning my own bows.
As for the family, my wife is a country girl from the Mississippi delta, and her dad is a hunter, so she gets it. We have a 6 year old daughter that I was blessed enough to have in the blind with me for my first archery turkey this Spring. It was a weekend I will cherish forever. If you keep them included when you can and find a balance, your hunting habit shouldn't have to be a temporary seasonal separation.

Sad to say that we didn't get any kills, but saw plenty of does, a few fawns, and I certainly could hear the hogs out there in the thick stuff. I think we would have gotten some action if we'd have had some lights to hunt after dark. I look forward to doing it again soon.
For the time being, I'm still carrying a virgin bow... next time, I'm not passing up that rabbit that stopped in my kill zone. Got to get that first blood somehow.

I enjoyed it also Jim.
About the wabbit, gotta let the arrow go to get blood, but we can work on that next time.
Now let's review one of the hunting lessons I gave you: Open bag of corn or protein, dump it in the feeder barrel, repeat 7-10 times until full.
FYI, pigs hit the wallow we dumped the water in that night.

It's good to know the pigs were out there and I wasn't just hearing things.
My goal for the next trip is to get blood, be it rabbit, racoon, or pig. As long as it's legal, I'm taking a shot!

Thanks so much for the offer, I'll be glad to take you up on that. Hope to meet you and the other Austin/Round Rock/Georgetown at a happy hour soon.
