Do you have to transfer name on a used pistol?

I was wondering if you buy a used pistol from a private seller, what do you have to do to get the firearm in your name? Is it a big hassel? Thanks

Anthony, get the serial and have it checked first, also make yourself out a little transfer record, make sure you get the information off of the sellers drivers license....now you don't have to, but this covers your butt as best you can when buying from a private party.

You can do that if you are the paranoid type or you can hand the other person the money, he hands you the pistol, you both shake hands and part ways happy.

There is no gun registration in the great state of Texas.

                  No registration, no transfer.

if you are the careless type, then you don't....personally, I like having all my I's dotted and T's crossed when it comes to a potential felony firearm charges...no one knows I have that documentation because it never leaves my possession, it resides in the safe with the collection....if I ever decide to sell it and there is an issue that arises...that piece of paper is a better butt saver than your word....alone...I even keep emails regarding online firearm transactions...to each his own

they aren't registered....there might be an official buy/sell chain/paperwork if it goes through a dealer or pawn shop or entities like that....

Anthony, say you purchase a gun from someone you don't know, you get pulled over with it in the ride or whatever...serial is run, comes up stolen or whatever....now what....now if you have a paper trail, pic of drivers license and documentation of transaction...can't really refute that......

Did you miss the no registration in Texas part?

If he runs the number and it comes back as not stolen no problem. If it's shown stolen then I don't know. I would like TVC184 to chime in about that.

But even if you have all that paperwork that blacksunshine talks of, you are still in possession of a stolen gun. Not sure how that's going to help you since you are the one currently in possession of it. I do remember TVC saying another thread that it's not against the law to be in possession of stolen property. Not sure if that applies to firearms as well.

When dealing in gun transactions, common sense goes a long way. Most folks can tell when they are dealing with a shady character.
