How Much for a Duck Mount?

I have a few bucks on the wall. I should have a coon skin to add to that......hopefully soon. The prospects for taking a nice buck on my place this year are not good. I have yet to see any mature deer on the trail cam. But.......it looks like the duck hunting might be pretty good. I would like to get a ringneck and/or a gadwall mounted this year. How much should I expect to pay? Does anyone know of any good bird taxidermists in the Houston/Deer Park area?

I remember reading about putting them in some panty hose and freezing them. Any other tips?

I pay $200.00 for a mount flying or standing. This is around DFW. Hope that helps.

I went to a guy who works out of a his house in DFW last year. I had a teal done for $145 and a mallard for $155. He did a great job. Davis Taxidermy if you want to google him.

Roger Harp in Baytown. His place is off of GouHole road. He is really good, did about 8 ducks for me in the past. It has been awhile, so I don't know how much. I would assume $200 would get it done. I don't have his phone number handy, sorry.

Anyway, i thought it would be cheaper to mount a duck considering its size. i wouldnt have figured over a bill!

Size really has nothing to do with the price of a mount. A good taxidermist bases his prices on the cost of materials, associated overhead, and the actual time that it will take him to produce a mount. Ducks take about the same time as a deer shoulder, just a little less materials. You will find some guys that will mount a duck for less than $200, but that's about average. If you want to choke, send one to Stephan Savides ... he's like a fancy resturant when it comes to bird taxidermy ... if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it!

Kevin ... your coon is SUPPOSED to be in my next shipment from the tannery.

$175-$225 is what I have paid for my seven mounts.....$200 is average.....

If you are really serious about a quality mount, nobody is better than The Birdman, Todd Huffman. You have to ship it to him but it's worth it.....check out his pics.

Prices quoted above are in line. I just wanted to add one thing...don't get cheap with a duck mount. I have three on the wall that don't do the birds justice because I went for the "best deal". The next "trophy" duck I get will sit in the freezer while I do ALOT of due diligence...good luck with your pursuit.

Thanks guys....sounds like $200 is about the going rate. I'll check out Roger Harp in Baytown.

                    Kevin,
No worries....I was just wondering if you would look at this post. Do you mount birds?

Yeah, a few, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert.
I CAN do them, and enjoy doing them, but there's a bunch of guys that do a whole lot better birds than me.

What???? Thought you were the man on everything!!!

$200 average is about the going rate. I got two done for less last year but I know the guy and get a discount.

I pay $150-$165 out here, but Vic lives in rural Oregon and comes 'south' to pickup and drop off birds with his customers in the bay area. Local rates are $250+.

When you shoot it, gently wash off any blood with whatever water is there, tuck the head under the wing. I wrapped my birds in an extra sweater I keep in a plastic bag in my marsh bag, to further protect them when transporting home. Put them on a strap and they're ruined for mounting in the necks. I stored in a ziplock baggie, but I've hear the stocking works well too.

I did a grouping of a sprig and 2 green wing teal (since they naturally fly together), and instead of a wood base, had Vic leave the aluminum rod long. I drilled holes into the 2x4s behind the sheetrock and mounted them in-flight in formation so they look like they're really flying. I have a high ceiling in my family room, so the pinny is about 6 feet off the floor, but they're great to look at. People have done double-takes walking into the room, it looks like they're frozen in-flight. You can't see, but I painted the aluminum rod to match the wall color too.

19 hours and 2 minutes to shootin' time tomorrow, but who's watch watching the day before duck season???
