How to get an offshore job?

My little brother is looking to get a job while his fiancee is in vet school. Is willing to work offshore or out of town. Anybody have any ideas. Recent Tech grad with lots of ranch work experience but no oilfield experience. He is just looking to pay for a wedding (long story) and put as much money away as possible in the next four years.

    Thanks guys

Does he have to be on a rig or will he ride a towboat? I ride for Higman towing company now and love it. Kirby is a pretty good one as well. They send all green hands to deck school so their not lost on the job. Pm me and maybe I can talk to him about it.

Tell him to check out rigzone.com and make online resume.... Tell him to look under drilling jobs, apply for any and all roustabout or floor hand jobs he finds...

Maybe Tejas Outdoors will be on in a minute. He's sharp guy on that stuff and could probably help you out some.

                      Morning TWP,

Your brother may want to look into working on drilling rigs ONSHORE instead of offshore. Onshore rigs can deal with guys coming & going but offshore companies want folks that are planning to make it a career. It takes a special mindset and spouse to allow us to be on a rig / boat for 28 days straight.

I work offshore as an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) supervisor and since 9-11 it is really hard to get clearance to work offshore. I can only tell you what is required from my viewpoint. I work out of Port Fourchon, LA and you can't even get on the Port property without a background check & clearance.

He would have to get a TWIC card ( https://twicprogram.tsa.dhs.gov/TWICWebApp/ ) and the website I included here will describe that federal fiasco. With Obammy still not allowing much drilling to proceed in the Gulf, guys with zero experience are really at a loss. It has only been in the past 2 months that offshore rigs have started getting ready to drill again & around 50 permits (shallow & deep water combined) have been issued in the past 14 +/- months since the Deepwater Horizon tragedy on 4-20-2010. That compares to probably 20 permits PER MONTH previously issued BEFORE 4-20-10.

Due to the vast number of experienced offshore workers that are still looking for work, I don't know of any oil field service companies that are interested in guys with no related experience.

This has been a long-winded posting but the bottom line is your brother is much more likely to get a job on a land-based rig than offshore. Maybe Texaskid82 can get him on a tug or somewhere. Good luck to him.

If he decides to pursue offshore work as a long term career, then Edison Chouest Offshore is the best company I know of to work for. Their website is http://www.chouest.com/employmentopportunities.html

And don't believe Draco, I'm not an expert in anything!!
