    Purchasing a Rifle... Thoughts?

My father in law needs a new rifle. I've been able to deduce that he wants a .270 and I think it should be a bolt action. Based solely on aesthetics I've narrowed the search down to the Browning A Bolt or a Winchester Model 70. I've never actually shot either one of these models so I'm at a bit of a loss. Any benefits of one over the other?

I've had two M70 and both were good shooting guns, but very picky on what ammo they shot. About 1 MOA once I found what they liked. Never had a Browning rifle.

A pre-64 model 70 will hurt your wallet but has to be mentioned

Don't overlook the 700, but I would get a winnie before an a-bolt

I would have to go with a 25-06 but nothing wrong with a 270 !

A-bolts are pretty but thats about it. Win. or Rem over the Browning. I like the looks of the 700 CDL. Winchester is back up and running and I'd think they got all their CQ issues worked out. Haven't looked at any of their new stuff.

I don't know what your budget is for your FIL, but you might look at Cooper (Cooper Firearms of Montana).

            Accurate and nice looking rifles....

Of the 2 I believe Winchester gets my vote. I am partial to the Remington mod 700 myself.

Curious as to what it is about the A-bolt that you guys don't like. And, isn't it true that the A-bolt and the Mod 70 are made by the same company? Maybe the same plant?

I'd be interested to hear more about that as well.

I looked at and shot the M70, the A-bolt, the Ruger 77 and the Rem 700

                              Chose: Remington 700 CDL SF
Sharp looking, best groups out of all with the factory ammo, good weight to recoil ratio
I didn't like the 3 stage safety, and the 700 bolt cycle was more smooth and clean

                              And mine is a .270
