    Chevy 6.0L or Ford V10??

Looking at getting an older (2005 ish) 3/4 ton GAS 4x4 crew cab truck. This will NOT be a daily driver, just to pull a small travel trailer/atv trailer. I know mileage will be terrible on both, but if I need to pull something heavier, I can. And for you diesel lovers, I know they have a purpose, just not for me. Just looking for personal experience with each. thanks

I drive a 2007 with 6.0 and it pulls pretty well for a gas engine.

Love my V10. I bought it because once in a while I needed to tow 11000 lbs. It is A 99 model. It got better gas mileage than the Ford V8 at the timeand has lots of tow power. Expect 10-11 while towing light travel trailer. 8-10 with big travel trailer and 15 to 15 open hwy empty.

I had an '03 GMC crew cab with the 6.0 and it pulled very well. I also got better mileage when not pulling than you will get with a V10. I averaged 15-16 mpg's and it was a 1500HD.

I got a 6.0 in my half ton Vortec Max. I love it. I hauled about 11k with it last week. It knew it was there, but handled it no problem.

pm cactusexp, he can tell you about the 6.0 (09 1 ton) it will pull, but it sure does get bogged down easy if the load is much over 6K lbs or so. When you get closer to 10K lbs it really struggles. If you are buying a truck to not drive everyday but to pull with, why is a diesel not for you? With gas these days the gasoline itself starts to breakdown after only a couple weeks in your tank so you cant let them sit long at all without new gas. Diesel takes a long long time to go bad, plus for pulling does so much better. I know you said they were not for you, but just curious on your reasoning.

The V10 ford or older V10 dodge will outpull the 6.0 everytime. Why not look at the 8.1L chevy?

As far as the diesel.....If I were pulling really heavy loads, I would go with it. Just looking overall, the general maintenance on it is a lot more. And with the older diesels, when I hear about replacing injectors and such and $4 or $5k, it just scares me. I know the gas engines have problems too. I started out looking to get an older diesel, but have sorta talked myself out of it. What is funny, in my single days, I had a 00 ford diesel and a 02 chevy 6.0 and liked the chevy alot. Did not like the diesel because of the lack of response.

It seems the V10 is really hard to find. It either has a ton of miles or is really new....nothing in between around the 05 models.

Dodge is out....love the motors, but everything around them is junk.

I have a 00 dodge diesel and to put new injectors in it is less than 1K for stock injectors. For an injector pump (only big expence on the 24v dodges it is about 1,800 installed. the 6.0 Ford diesel is the only one that has expensive maintenance.

Is the 8.1 a 454? Our 32 ft RV has a 454 and it hauls.

Of the two mentioned by the op, I would go with the V10. From what I hear it's much more engine for slightly worse fuel economy.

A round of injectors for the Duramax is at least 4,000$ to have it done.

The 6.0 I had would outpull the ford V-10, but it did have a 4.10 rear end.
