Has anyone read Empire of the Summer Moon?

Amazing read!!! Comanches were bad, bad dudes. I thought this book would make me feel pity for the plight of the Comanche Nation... it just made my feelings more complex. It's hard to pity a culture that was so brutal towards its neighbors.

Anyone else have any suggestions on books about Indians, Texan or Western History?

Bout half way thru. Really interesting that much of it's set in my stompin grounds to this point. Definately takes the flower off the rose of the plight of the natives. . .

            Excellent read.
Makes a visit to Palo Duro Canyon or Caprock Canyons come alive. Imagine life there 150 years ago.

Just finished it a few days ago. They were as brutal as they come but what I was amazed by was their coexistence with the mustang. The description of them roping a wild one, almost choking it to death and breathing air into its nostrils and riding it away blew my mind.

I've read it -- loved it. And, by the way, the author lives in Austin.

I know of several other books you would probably enjoy, but will have to post the exact titles/authors later today. I'm a bit of a Texas history buff.

I just finished it, and enjoyed it. You might try "The Captured".

I totally agree with you. I know our forefathers treated some Indians badly, but to some like the Comanche we were just giving to them what they already were giving to others. They had no room to complain.

For a very good historical read (it's almost like a text book, and not one big story line), you would enjoy The Indians of Texas... This one sure gave me a different view of the native Americans and how life was before the Europeans got here and then some good background as to why the Europeans treated some of the tribes they way they did...
                            Here's a link to it on Amazon.com:
