How far will your arrow travel?

I was reading an article about "flight archery" shooting-for-distance contests - they seem to be popular in Great Britain. The compound record is over 1,300 yards using specialized equipment. That got me to wondering how far an average 60-70lb hunting rig will fling an arrow. Have you ever tried it?

I though about this the other day while watching the movie "The Last Samurai"

If you shoot it straight up in the air you can't see it anymore....... At least that's what I've heard

All i know is when i was 14, i was under a water tower, shot up to see if i could hit it, well i did. Cool sparks flew, we could see them because it was dark, but we could not see where the arrow went, or more importantly where it was going! Needless to say me and my brothers decided we would not do that again. Never did find that arrow, Huummmm...

Last summer my uncle bet me he could hit my 3D buck target from my barn. I told him he was crazy. He shot about a foot over the target, pretty close since the target was 180 yards from my barn.

I would think a typical hunting rig should be able to get 400 yards or so?

I have tested that theory with my bow before and it goes just a little over 400 yard.

This is true. Back when I was a kid we would do this and as it turned sideways to start coming back down, we would take off running into the cabin thinking that thin roof would stop it. That's not the only stupid thing I have done that I'm lucky I lived through.

I know a six year olds bow has enough energy to make it over the house and penetrate Dad's trunk lid.

We've played archery golf a couple times with our bows. Same rules as golf onlu use your bow for a club and a 3D target for the hole. We would shoot 3-400 yards a shot depending on the angle you held your bow. It also helps if you don't have any fletching on your arrow.

Years ago I met a man that held the record for flight shooting...can't remember his name but he shot a foot bow.....seems you laid on the ground and placed the bow on your feet and pulled the string with both hands....If I remember right they were shooting these things over a mile....

                    Distances shot
The furthest distance shot with any bow is 2,047 yards (1,871.84m) . This was shot by the late Harry Drake in 1988 using a crossbow. The furthest with a hand-held - and pulled - bow is 1,336 yds 1' 3" (1,222.01m) , shot by Don Brown with an unlimited conventional Flight bow in 1987. My 40kg Compound World Record of 1,162 yards was made shooting a 30 kg bow -- I can't pull 40 kg!

                    Distances achieved in Britain include:

Conventional Flight Bow (unlimited): Alan Webster - 916 yards
Compound Flight Bow (under 60 lbs): Barry Groves - 914 yards

Not near far enough if you hit a hog in the shoulder!

I have shot my bow as far as possible, into a field. We tried different angles and higher angles went further (higher than you think) Obviously it was very scientific. But, the bet was could you shot an arrow further than you could drive a golf ball? We decided was about the same, 280-300 yds, on a good day. The bow was set to about 60 lbs.
