    Axis Down at Double D!!!

Took a buddy down to the ranch this past weekend. He has been a customer of mine for about 4 years now and has killed one of everthing I have on the ranch. The first time that he came down, he told me that he really wanted a good axis. Over the years I have put some nice ones in front of him, but nothing that he really got fired up about. I have been running some hunts on a friend of mine's place in Watervalley for about a year now, and he has some BIG axis. So we decided on a change of scenery and headed down there. We got there Friday night, and spun the road feeder around the house and kicked back on the porch with a beer. Had about 15 axis bucks come in, so we had a good idea of what we were goin to be looking for in the morning. The next morning we went to a blind and corned the roads around it. Before too long, we had about 20 or so axis out if front of us. This guy was one of them, and we looked long and hard at him. There were some other bucks in the 34" range, but not really what we were looking for, I knew of one buck that was around 37" or 38" and we really wanted him. We looked over this buck a while and talked about how cool the extra beam he had going was and how you don't always see non typical axis. Later that evening at another stand, we finally saw the big boy we were after, and much to our disappointment, he had broken a cottle point. After looking him over and deciding to pass him up because of the broken point, we thought back to the non typical from that morning. We decided that if given the chance, we would take him. We didn't see him that evening, so we headed back to the house for some steaks. We ate and were just getting started with the beer drinking when I looked out at the haybale by the house and there were 6 axis bucks eating at it. We grabed a fresh beer and some binocs and headed out on the porch. After watching them for awhile, the non typical came in. We snuck out to the highrack and grabbed his gun off of it and crept back onto the porch. We looked him over some more, and about the time we decided to shoot, all kinds of animals started coming in. We had WT, blackbuck, mouflon, tons of axis, fallow and even some red stag. There were so many animals out there that there was no way to take a shot. After about 20 minutes one of the stag got alittle tired of a small fallow eating by him and lowered his head and rammed him, that spooked everything and split them up long enough for us to get the shot we needed. He dropped on the spot and we finally had our deer down. He's not the biggest, but with the vevet still attached, and the extra main beam, he was a cool trophy for sure. Thanks for following along.

Nice axis.. Hard to tell from the story, but are you saying this guy was 37 inches? I was thinking this deer might hit 30 inches, but could see him being closer to 28 inch one as well. Cool deer with that extra stuff.... Hardly ever see non typ axis...

No, not at all. This guy was 30" on one side and 29" on the other, the 37"er had a broken cottle so we passed him and decided to take this one since he was different. Sorry for the confusion.
