Well I got the opportunity to take my first Axis Buck this morning. I headed out to Huntin the Wild out towards Mount Vernon. Since I have never hunted axis deer I jumped on the opportunity to chase after this buck since he has been on the verge of reverting back. The buck as I was told is roughly 9 years old. Well I got up there early this morning after my 3 hour drive and met up with Kayle. He had told me where he seen the buck yesterday evening so we were off to track him down. I was planning on whacking him with my DXT but I did bring the ole open sight winchester 30-30. We must of drove around looking for the deer for a couple hours and hadn't seen them anywhere. Kayle was sure that they had to be up near the front pasture but we had been through there roughly 3 times and nothing. Well we decided to head back up towards that area and just kick it down a notch and really keen in on the trees. Well sure enough we spotted a small axis buck and 4 does. So we took off around the corner trying to catch to see if the one I was after was with the group. We got around the corner and I spotted some tines in the brush. Sure enough there he was. So I jumped out and decided at that point that it's too thick to try and get a shot with the bow. So went to the back up and grabbed the 30-30. We snuck around and got him lined up. Well at that point I had no shot because of this dip in the landscape. The buck jumped up onto the bank and made a short sprint and stopped. He turned and made the wrong choice as I sent a 165 grain hollow point down the tube and into him. The buck stood there but I new I hit him so I pumped another into him and he then collapsed. I was happy as all get out to bag my first Axis buck. He is not the biggest but he's got some big brow tines. Hope you enjoyed the pics and the story.
