    Shark fishing Galveston?

Questions for shark guys. I am looking at beach/kayak fishing for blacktips and whatever else I can catch/release but I have never done this. Any help or tips like bait(what and where to get), placement (thinking about 300 to 500 yards out) and any spots that are decent. I am headed down in the middle of aug.

Be prepared for alot of them. Out distance is good. I used to cut up mullet.

Are you running baits out or fishing off the yak. Either way is fine, I would drive on down to surfside to get away from all the people though, plus the water is always a little nicer down there once you get off the rocks of the seawall. Bait is easy, take a cast net and get some mullet, they can be anywhere from inches of water to the first gut. If you cant throw a net or don't wanna just get your little pole out with a piece of shrimp to catch whiting (#1 besides mullet or jack-for me), ladyfish or sandtrout. Hook them up and put em' in the water something will eat it.

Forgot about rays somehow, Ksig is right, rays are really good if you can find one.

Look at texas kayak fisherman.com, they have a section for it "BTB" beyond the breakers. They have some die hard big water yak fisherman that post some great info.

Drip different bait in each gut...and yeah stingray is candy to shark but pricey we keep everyone we catch year round to save for bait. Were down in surfside area quite a bit let me know if you have any spedific questions. What kinda setups are you running. Remember leave enough line for the big runs

For bait other than ray whiting is my number 1 go to. And its great for bull reds as well. Can easily catch it in the surf on shrimp or squid get a castanets throw a few large mullet out and anything else you catch. We rarely but bait to cut up just put whatever you catch on the hook until something better cones along....also grab some zip ties for your big baits..little save you from losing them and don't be afraid to make double and triple hook leaders for large baits. If you don't have stuff to make leaders find someone that does. Bait shops charge about 7 for a good leader and there about a Buck to make

I've caught a lot of sharks in the surf on cut mullet. Just cut the mullet into steaks about an inch thick.

Wow the info is great from you guys and an abundance too. Lovin it. Was plannin on bringing a cast net and small rig for bait, but still lookin for the big setup, the problem is finding something that holds that much line 500 to 700 yards of 50 to 80# mono around here.

I love long rod fishing when conditions are right. My go to bait is fresh cut whiting and then mullet. Don't forget to use wire leaders. I make my own and usually make them about 3 ft. long. I also use surf weights to keep the bait in place. They are a must when their is good tidal movement.

I don't have a kayak so I bait up, walk out to the 3rd gut, heave the bait out as far as I can then walk it back in. I have caught countless black tips this way along with black drum, bull reds, sting rays, 25+ inch specks (on cut whiting surprisingly), and a few unknowns that headed for Ol Mexico.

Here is a picture of the surf weights that I use.
