need some help with Toro TMC-212 sprinkler system

i just recently bought a house with this sprinkler system. right now i have programs B and C turned off. program A is set to water the front yard (station 1) for 40 minutes, the front flower beds (station 2) for 20 minutes, the backyard (station 3) for 40 minutes, and the small side yard/flower bed (station 4) for 20 minutes. i have it on calendar format to come on every sunday at 4 am.

today is sunday, and the sprinklers in the front yard were running at 10:30 am when i came home. i had a ton of runoff in the street. i checked out the rest of the property and everything was soaked. it looked like the system had been constantly running since 4 am... what have i done wrong?

as of right now, i have all the stations set to come on at 4 am. i was reading in the manual and it seems like this might be my problem? although the manual did say "A start time that occurs while a watering cycle is already in progress will be delayed until the active watering cycle is finished".

    thanks

I have ours set to 15 min per station and they come on twice every other day of the week. 40 min seems way too much....

i have been told that st augustine does best with an inch of rain per week, and its better to get all that inch at the same time rather than spread out. this makes that water soak in deep, keeping the roots growing deep rather than up near the surface where you will have lots of die off in the winter. if you water it just a little bit a few times a week, the water never gets down deep in the soil, you only soak the very top each time you water.

Sounds like that zone controller received the "ON" signal but didn't get the "OFF" signal. Might be a damaged wire or more likely something is stuck in the valve keeping it from closing, like a little rock maybe. Done any repairs recently? This happens if the line didn't get flushed. Might also just be a bad valve. I'm in Commercial Property Management and this happens all of the time at the properties we manage. Also, on watering time you might consider the cycle soak method. Water for 10 or 15 minutes and let it cycle off. Wait and cycle the zone on again, multiple times if need be, this give time for the soil to absorb all the water and prevents runoff, if that's an issue for you. Ive heard the same about St Augustine, it does like about an inch or water per week. Good Luck.

Sounds like you might have more than 1 start time. Most controllers have 3 or 4 start times per program. You might want to start there.

About half the time on our service calls, programming is the culprit. Usually if its a bad controller the system won't turn on. If it won't turn off it's usually a valve problem.

ya i think that is my problem. i was confusing the program start times with station/zone start times. i think i just need to go in and turn the other 3 start times off and keep the first start time at 4 am. then it should work fine, knock on wood
