    Buying Golf Cart Question

Ok I have questions about buying a golf cart from an individual not a dealer.

    1. Do they have titles and do you get the title transferred like you do a car, boat etc..?

    2. Do you have to pay tax on it like a car, boat etc?

Also since they are legal to drive on certain roads do you have to carry liability insurance on it if you are driving it on the road? I heard you do but that was just hear say. I know there are some LEO's on here that should be able to answer this.

I don't have a title for mine and I bought it from a guy who fixes and sells a pile of them.

Not sure bout the title. They can be made street legal as long as the speed limit is 30 or under. No insurance required

I do insurance and you can put liability on them but most of my clients put just comp and collision on them. If they are street legal (some cities require this) then yes you need liability.

Thanks guys. We can use them in our neighborhood all streets are 30 and under. Didnt know if they had titles or not. Just wanted to be aware of what to look for when I get one.

New golf carts come with a bill of sale and a manufacturers statement of origin. You don't HAVE to register them and pay taxes on them but I chose to do so on mine to make my "free golf cart" deal conform to IRS guidelines. On a used one that doesn't have a title a bill of sale is probably OK...
