How do you hook live shrimp when popping?

Through the tail or under the horn or...?
Is popping a good way to fish in the surf or wade/bay fishing only because of the waves in the surf?
Where do you keep the shrimp while wading into the surf? I've heard that you don't want any kind of bait on your side while in the surf because of sharks...

I've wade fished many times (dead shrimp and squid) but never fished with live shrimp. So I'm new to the whole idea of popping live shrimp but I assume it's a lot like working a hula popper right?

    Thanks!

i don't fish salt water much but when i do i go under the horn...
the way it was explained to me was that the popping cork is supposed to imitate the sound of a trout getting after a shrimp on the top of the water. you just pop the cork a time or two and wait to see if some fish heard it and come to see if there are anymore shrimp in the area.. as opposed to a constant popping of it.. (corse sometimes people tell me stuff just to see if i will go for it...)

Under the horn is the best way to go. Keep the bait in your standard white yellow live bait bucket.

If you are concerned about sharks and your shrimp then I'd hate to see you with a stringer full of what they really like to eat... trout, reds, whiting, smacks etc.

Try Gulp or D.O.A.'s. Much easier to keep in their intended state. And less messier too.

X 2 but also break the horn tip off for a better hook up ratio.

So you just tie a stringer to your waist with the bait bucket on the other end. Like a 5' stringer?
                  Thanks guys!

You do one over hand you can yank out with one pull.... You don't want to be towed out..

to heck with poppin' cork, throw a brown lure on that rig and bounce that baby off the bay floor or pull gold spoons through the surf (the latter I have yet to do but often hear of it that ways)...

When I was younger we wade/swim go out to the 2nd or 3rd sand bar at night (if surf cooperated) and fish with shrimp or cut bait in a fanny pack and a 10' stringer tied to our waist. A decent size shark decided he wanted my stringer one night and drug me backwards a few feet. I dropped my rod, screamed like a girl and walked on water back to the shore. Never did it that way again.

I've done the latter and prefer silver spoons

I go thru the middle of the shrimps head, just dont hit the black spots. I prefer to freeline as well. But with a cork just give it a couple pops now and then, if the trout are there they will find it.
