    Linux users...

I am getting to the point where I need to know how to use Linux. Who all knows how to use it, and what would you suggest as being the best way to learn?

            in all seriousness..
download a copy, install it -- installs , depending on the linux flavor and your knowledge of hardware/networking, are pretty simple and straight forward.

Probably a billion and half forums out there for help, assistance, and how-to's.

            I prefer FreeBSD.

What do you mean by "use it"?
Mange Linux servers from cmd line or learn how to use one of the various distributions in a desktop environment?

Sorry I should have been a little more clear. I have an old laptop loaded with Ubuntu and am comfortable operating it. I am looking to learn command line and server management.

I've been using it for about 10 years now. I learned by experience. I'd want to do something, read how, and learn it that way, just one thing at a time. Eventually I learned how everything works together. It's easy to use graphically, it's all the command line stuff, writing shell scripts, etc that gets tricky when you want to start tweaking or doing cool things with your computer.

Quickest way to learn is start with a barebones distro like slackware that forces you to learn command line interface and setting everything up yourself. Mainstream distros like ubuntu you can use straight out of the box without doing much of anything.
