Looks like an Emory's Rat Snake...

dull coloration due to it being not too long before it'll shed (or would have shed)

I often wonder why people want to get on here and start a snake ID thread for a snake they've already killed. If you're going to kill every snake anyway, what difference does it really make what kind it is? It's a Texas Rat Snake.

Same pattern as the rat snake I killed in my shower over the weekend, but a little different color.

And it's amazing how many that spend time outdoors can't identify different kinds of snakes. I can't name them all but I know which ones NEED killing and which ones are "good" snakes ("good" as in DO NOT need to die)

rat snake, but at first glance if he scared me I prolly would have killed him based off his head.

I often joke about "good" snakes are dead ones, but i can identify most of the bad ones, but when startled by one the one think i look at is head shape, but that isnt always acurate.

Here's an interesting snake that Mindy and I found dead on a road a couple of days ago. It's a Northern Scarlet Snake, a threatened species in Texas and the first one I've ever seen. Plus, it was found in Hunt County, which I believe is outside of it's normal range. I will be sending this one to the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection in College Station.

It's sad to find a beautiful and rare snake like this one dead, but at least it will be used for educational purposes.

Do you drive around, see a dead snake, slam on the brakes, just to identify it? Im not trying to be a smart arse, but you ARE Snakelover after all

It makes me crazy to think that some people would intentionally kill a rare and threatened species like the one I just posted just because it's a snake. Without even having a clue what it is they're destroying. So senseless!
