    Home-Made Walking Sticks

I really want to make a cool walking stick and wanted to see some of the one's yall have for ideas?

I'll probably make one that I'll actually use and then another that has all sorts of turkey feathers, deer antler etc on it.

What sort of wood is best? Do I need to treat it and how?
    Any other tips?

    Thanks

I have made a lot of them over the years and I use Osage Orange/ Bois D Arc wood mostly. It has a nice color when finished and is super strong. I don't have pics. Sold a few and gave most away.

Hedge, Osage is the same thing. I like using honey locust but it's kinda hard to get all the thorns off.

I saw a guy in Palestine, Texas taking the large vines and making walking sticks. He would look for a large vine that had several twists in it for character.

Will a vine harden enough for a good walking stick? I plan on using this bad-boy for walking but i want to be able to slam it down on a snake if I see one

I would sure go with Bois D Arc. My first one was made to work cattle with, I still have it 27 years later, It has stood up to some pretty rough handling.

I used to make these all the time out of vines. Find some that have some good twists and cut them out and bring them home. Dry them out real good and widdle all the bark off of them. Give them a good clear coat finish and you have it. I used to carve morel mushrooms in mine as I used them for mushroom hunting. I promise you they are hard enough to do some damage to a snake.

It's bark. It adds a little character and offsets the top piece if you so choose to carve something in there.

Persimmon also makes a good walking stick.

If you want a cane handle then go with Chinaberry. The root always turns at 90 degrees just under the ground to make a perfect handle.
