    Child's Bow Question

I am going to buy my seven year old son his second bow for Christmas this year. He started shooting on a cheap fiberglass longbow, which he has since outgrown.

He is a lefty and I want to get something he can really have fun with. I've been considering the Genesis bow. Does anyone have any info or experience with this bow? Any other suggestions? Thanks

See if he can pull back 20 lbs. If so, get the Browning micro midas or micro Adrenaline. You can send it in and get the 30-40 then 40-50 lb limbs for $50.00 as he grows. Parker Buckshot or Challenger is fairly similar. If he can't pull 20 lbs. then genesis might work. Where do you live in Kingwood? I'm off of Northpark and Woodland Hills in Sherwood trails.

Thanks Chew...I don't think he can quite pull back 20# yet. I'll have to take him up to Gander Mountain and check it out. I'll surely look into those bows though.
I'm actually in Kings River Village just across the bridge on W. Lake Houston PKWY.

        Jason,

Listen to Bobby, he gave you good advice there. In addition to getting him a little compound, also go to the trad page and look at the thread...check out this kids form.....Joey "tinman" Gates is making little board bows for kids. Not fancy, but something else to have fun with. Tell him I sent you and that you are a new member of LSBA and he will fix you up...I am sure.

That Genesis pulls at 17lbs. great for multiperson fling'n.
the Midas and Buckshot in the 20-30lb draw wt. can be turned down to that 17lb pull and they have 18-28 draw length adjustment.
would advise putting a whisker bisquit on what ever you get him. just makes it easy for the young ones during drawback.

Jason, all of the above is right on! If he's ready to go with a compound, the Micro Midas is hard to beat. If you'd like another longbow for him, I'd be happy to put him on my list and build one for him before X-mas.

I am also working on a set of plans and taking pics to do a build along thread that will show anyone how to build these little longbows...but that may be a few days out still...I got 6 more bows in the glue-up stage right now! Santa's Workshop is going full speed!

Highly recommend the PSE Spyder S4. I bought my youngest daughter one and one of the great thing I like about it is it has a draw stop unlike the Genesis it also has a let-off. I believe 70%. It also has a lot of growing room. The one I bought for my daughter went as low as 8lbs up to 35lbs and 5” of draw length adjustment in 1/8” adjustments. There a lot of other bows to look at like the Hoyt Trykon Jr. Give these a look at.

Pearson also makes a compound that is 10-20 lbs, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50 limbs. they have the same deal as all the others $39 and you can upgrade to the next set of limbs. My 5 yr old is getting one for Christmas. he is pulling about 17 lbs @ 18"

You might also look at Forge bow company. I bought my son the LS1050. It goes from 10-50# on the same bow. All you have to do is change out the modules. The draw range is due to pivoting limb pockets so the limbs always stay in the same place instead of moving. Also it has a life time warrenty so by the time he grows out of it, He'll be well up in his teens. Good luck

Thanks for all the responses. I've got my research cut out for me. Tinman, thanks for the offer. I asked him several times if he wants to keep shooting a longbow and he said he really wants a bow with "wheels." I'm going to take the info from this thread and do some research. Thanks to all for the info.

Lots of good info has been given!! I started out with the Browning Micro Midas and now shoot a Parker Challenger. Have been very satisfied with both. FYI--LSBA members get a 5% discount at Sureshot Archery (Humble), Bullseye Archery (Danbury) and Santa Fe Archery (Santa Fe). Good luck to your son!
