    Target caliber question

Thinking about putting together a target rifle for my brothers graduation next summer. Something he could go out and put 50 rounds through no problem. Was thinking about a 223 but I want something that's going to be able to get out to 500+ yards no issue
What do y'all use or have had experience with?

    308
    260 if you reload

22-250 for off the shelf stuff. Very little recoil, and I can shoot as many times as I can afford in a day.

A 308 will get the job done. Or if you reload and have a little bit more money you want to put into it to make it a custom then go 6mmBR or one of the 6.5 x 284's.

          Does he reload?

          If so- 243, 260 or 7mm08

If not, 308 would be a good choice for accurate, facotry ammo.

I should have gone into a little more depth. Looking for a small caliber he could afford, he's in college
            I've got a 308 that shoots incredible
            Some small

IMO, if you want smaller caliber than 308, go with the 260

quality top notch components, solid gunsmith, and the rifle will shoot better than the operator

My planes are to shoot out my barrel on the 308 and then rebarrel into a 260.

Check out the prices on the .257 Weatherby brass/ammo before you decide to go that way. Nothing a college guy could afford unless he has a sugar-mama or sugar-daddy.

Out to 500 yds, the numbers on the 6.5mm/.264 bullets (.260 Rem, etc) would say go with it, but I'd prefer the 7-08. I have never "liked" the 6.5mm caliber but that's just my personal preference. And commercial ammo would be more available for the 7-08 I think.

One thing about the .308 though, surplus ammo is available for more affordable prices-

Ok then I would say stick with the 308. You could just use a donner rifle and do some small work to make it a great rifle. ie, change out stock, glass bed action, and what not. Alot of the mod's you could do at home with out a whole lot of money invested.

Can any of those reach out?

                            i w ould say 308..

if money isnt an object, a 30-378 weatherby, or a 257 weatherby..both have the same ballistics(or very close to exact) out to 1k yards. and those 30-378s are just so darn good lookin, and sweet shootin just expensive to shoot unless you reload
