    Hog deterrent question

Without putting up a hog pen, does anyone have ideas for keeping hogs from bumping against feeder legs and causing more corn to fall? Would long, sharp screws protruding from the legs work or would that just give them an even better scratching post because their hide is so darn thick?

Would carpet tack-strips keep coon from climbing them?

    Thanks

You might try these. I have not used them, but they look like they would work.

All carpet tack strips or shark's teeth will do for coons is to give them added traction to get up the feeder leg to the bottom of the barrel. Varmit guard is the way to go for coons, but it has to be bigger so they cannot hang onto it and stick their grimy paws in a spin the plate. Pens are about the best way that I know of to keep hogs out, and it has to be sturdy also.

For the above post, shark's teeth don't work on my coons.

I have a boar that is emptying feeders by bumping them. I will be watching this thread.

Anything you put on the feeder legs will just become a jungle gym for coons, hog pens and large varmint cages are the way to go

HOg pen or very sturdy 4 leg feeder base.

Shark teeth seem to work great on my feeder. Hogs have never tipped my feeder because my husband put 2 T posts on each side of each feeder leg to where they cross about 3' up. Then he wired the 3 posts together.

I fixed my problem by putting a hog trap directly under the feeder. They got use to eating out of it while i was gone then untie the door. In my experience if you can put the pressure on the hogs they take off. Kinda sucks cause I enjoy hog hunting more so than WT. And all my hogs have been run off for the most part.

Just get a spin tech feeder plate or one like it.

Shark teeth just help them climb up the legs. The only way we have found that works for the coons is a large varmit cage that is the same diameter as the barrel or an even better option is an Eliminator spinner plate from Carl at Ultramatic feeders. They're $39 but you'll save that in corn in a year. They are a spring loaded that only comes down when the motor goes off and seals back up against funnel after. As far as hogs....still nothing major that will stop them has been discovered, but either building strong leg supports or using T posts on each feeder leg and wire them together. It cost a little more money but putting up feeder pens will keep the hogs away and the WT more comfortable feeding there. Hope this helps

The eliminator spin plates work really well. Hogs cant bump the feed out and the coons cant spin it out.

                            This!
I bought one last year and saved a ton of cash on corn! 7 bags lasted all season at a 7 second feeding twice a day. I had a timer go out last weekend and ran to their office today and they replaced it for free. I'm very happy with thier feeders.

This one takes care of both bumping pigs and coons.
