No offense meant, but try doing your own taxes next year through turbo tax. Have your mom review just in case. Turbo tax will walk you everything and you'll get a better feel of how it all works. Also, get a copy of your pay stubs and w-2...that will help also.

Changing tax brackets is fun. Get a little raise and make less. It's awesome when you give the government a teachers salary every year and people that pay nothing (as in absolutely zero) get a refund or "rebate"
This is why I suggested a "straw" 1040--using numbers as close as you can estimate--then you will have a much closer idea of what your tax bill will be come April 15th.

And, here's what happens to all the money we pay in taxes--amazing what people buy when they are spending OPM--other peoples' money. Note what method of payment was used--

It's because the government is a bunch of ignorant buffoons. There is no reason anyone should get a tax refund. My wife and I claim single and zero dependents all year on my W4, and then on our 1040 we claim married and 5 and still have to pay thousands extra every single year. That's pure BS.

Bring on the flat tax or fair tax and let everybody pay their fair share!

X2, my mother was a CPA for 61 years and she still does my taxes. Just don't use that accounting firm that Enron used, not good accounting practices.

Flat tax sounds great, but I would even be happy if they would just reduce the tax rates and eliminate all deductions and loop holes. Paying in taxes should be simple.

Why shouldn't anyone get their own money back if they are overpaid?

Because they never should have "overpaid" in the first place. Flat or fair tax would get rid of all of that nonsense.

Why would you want to let the gov't hold your money, interest free for a year?

Exactly. They just make money off of us. We get charged interest, so why dont they? Not fair

Not to hijack, and this might help you too, the single tax brackets go from 8500-34500.......than 34500-83600. So say you make 35200 that year. Would it be smart to donate 700 dollars to the church or a tax deductible fundraiser of your choice so you dont go in the next bracket at a 5% tax rate increase?
I guess you just have to do a little math and figure out if x amount of dollars over that bracket is less than the 5% increase you would have to pay in the next bracket. Ive been wondering that lately

How do you figure you are paying "thousands extra" every single year? The tax coming out of your paycheck each period is lower than your tax liability so you just catch up at the end of the year. You said that no one should give the gov't an interest free loan and in this case you certainly aren't and you are mad about it?
