hog and deer question for the braintrust

I have a couple of spots that historically have held deer. last few months its nothing but pigs. One feeder in particular has a monster boar on it, in fact it's like clockwork to see him and three sows visiting daily.

    a. Is it the summer

    b. and has anyone ever gotten rid of/or reduced the hogs and seen an impact on their deer coming to the feeder.

I have pens up but i've left the gates open during the summer was going to close in august but I'm thinking I may need to shut them out now since I see almost no deer.

If you have hogs the deer activity will decrease. The hogs get corn most of the time, so the deer dont know to come look for it all the time. As long as you have corn and hogs can get it they will be there no matter the season. I know I see a lot more deer on my lease than others that dont have panels up.

We had a monster boar hanging around last year. We also had a bunch of sows/babies. We killed the big boar and all the others disappeared. Coincidence?? Maybe!!

I kinda have the same prob, except since last sept, I have been seeing hogs at feeders, deer also, but more hogs. Now hogs are gone and deer are at feeder! I don't know what happened??

Pigs, especially a large boar will dominate a feeder and run everything else off, especially deer. Kill the boar and the deer will return.

What feeder 2,3,6,13, I'll go take him out. Send me a text if you want as I'm about to walk out the door. This is Rob by the way.

Several years ago I was sitting at a feeder watching 3 bucks eat (all 3-4 year olds). Several hogs came in and the deer ran about 75 yards away. I shot the biggest hog and it ran about 20 yards away and fell dead. The deer were back at the feeder in less than 2 minutes. So shoot or fence the hogs out and the deer will return.

The setup I have on my place is two feeders that are set maybe 70 yards apart. One is set up in some really thick brush and one is more out in the open. For the most part, at least in the daylight, the pigs hit the feeder in the thick stuff and the deer hit the feeder that is in the open. Where I hunt is kind of an unusual situation but it might work for you also if possible.

All depends on what you want to feed, pigs or deer as far as shutting the gates. Have a similar situation at our place. Feeder at tank always had nothing but deer going to it. For about the last 2 months, 2 big hogs have taken it over and that is all you see at that feeder. They are there as soon as the feeder goes off. Going to put up cameras next time out and see what else comes to that feeder but I'm pretty sure its just those 2 pigs. Thats the only feeder we have going that is not in a pen as well. Deer at all the other feeders with pens. Another scenario is your neighbors not feeding. If you are low fence, have your neighbors shut down their feeders and the pigs moved over to your place?

Sean, Kill him. Close your pens too. Bad thing is once they have been getting that good corn flavor everyday, even if you close your pens, they will break in if big enough. We have had them try to break the wire and not been able to, so they jump on top of the panel and bend it way down or break our tie wire. We only open our pens for the hunt if we are there, then close them back. It's too tough to stop them once they get a habit of feeding there.

I totally agree with those above. Experienced same prob. Paneled around protein and corn feeder, set up feeder 50 or so yds away for pigs. Deer are hitting feeders everyday now.
