    Grandfather rifles being passed down...

Got a text from my dad this morning telling me my grandfather who is 82 is giving his guns to my father and uncle.

My dad asked me if he could pass it on directly to my younger brother since he doesn't have a deer rifle and i do.
I thought about it for a long time. Inheriting a deer rifle from the granddad is something I dreamed about. I didn't even know he had one.
I told my dad he could pass it to my younger brother, who doesn't hunt, just likes to shoot.
I got a little sad knowing I wouldn't be the one to get my grandfathers deer rifle even though I'm the only one that hunts, woulda loved to take an animal with that

Did I do the right thing as the eldest?

Good move on your part. If you lucky this could move him to hunt in the future, which would make this a very GRAND gesture from you.

Tuff call. I got my grandfathers 30-30 that I hunted with as a kid. My dad and all my uncles agreed that I should have it because I hunted with it.
I got a few 22's from my other grandfather but my uncle pretty much took all his rifles.

I might have mentioned that even though I have a rifle, his rifle is sentimental to me because of the bond he and I had with hunting. Maybe you can buy him another rifle at sometime and trade him.

        Gonna quote both of those

Ya I'm thinking it might be an opportunity for us to hunt together.

I don't think I'd ever try to take, my brother and I are close. I just want to take an animal with it

if I had spent time with granddad out in the sticks with that gun growing up & had all the memories, and brother did not...then the gun would be mine.

I would give brother my current gun and/or go buy him something he wanted. Sentimental objects are worth more to me than actual value...talk to your brother about it.

Do you know what kind of gun it was??

Neither of us have been with him much in the woods. I shot my first gun with him, it was a 22.
I have no idea what kind it is, 243 is all I was told

borrow it from you brother if you would like to kill a deer with it. i think that will give you the sentimental value that you are looking for.

my dad has my paw paws 50's model sako 270 and i plan on using it to kill a deer one day just to be able to say i did.

I would try to share it, I bet that if your brother doesn't hunt he would let you borrow it.

If your gradfather gave it to your dad, your dad can give to whomever he wants. You did the right thing.

You might have the chace to go with your bother, sometime, and be with him when he makes a memorable kill. Makes good memories.
My uncle bought a 30-30 Win. in 1949 when he bought his property. He past away 4 yrs ago and never shot a deer with that gun, no one did. I inherited his guns and took it out, the first season after his passing, and shot a fathead doe with one shot. That was a very fine day in my memory bank.

Tell your brother if he ever gets in a money pinch that you want first option to buy it. I have seen many heirlooms end up in other people's posession and cause a bit of strife in the family.
