Once upon a time, I was a sales manager for a mobile phone company. The phone itself can and will make a difference, however, there is more to it than that. Cell towers have different carriers for the same company. That means, if Sprint, for example, has a tower up, they will push out 4 different signals and your phone is programmed to pick up an individual signal (carrier). If your phone is programmed for carrier 1 but carrier 4 has the best signal, you get hosed. So, spending money on a new phone may or may not help you out. Hope this makes since.
For the record, Nokia does seem to pick up better...for some phone service. Cingular runs a different type network and Nokia is great for them. On the flip side, nokia sucks on the CDMA (Sprint) network.
I'm boring myself now...
