Wish I had come here to tap the never ending well of TBH experience before I made my own. We added a bunch of paper trying to save weight and it didn't go so well.

I may re-do it eventually because it has some cracks... I'm not sure if it will ever survive a move.

I've been reading some DIY websites on doing your own concrete countertops - it's tempting because of the cost savings. For example one guy said his lowest bid was around $4,000 to have it done and he did it himself for less than $1,000 including renting a cement mixer. It doesn't seem that hard - but it does look labor intensive and time consuming. (thus the high labor cost!) It also looks like one of those projects you get about 1/3rd of the way into and wish you'd just paid somebody else to do it. (been there a few times) I may start by just doing a 24"x60" counter top in the utility room and see how it goes before tackling the kitchen.

Geoff, I need to talk to you about your floors. We are considering the same thing when we build.

Next time your in my area mike, give me a ring and I'll show them to you.

The floors are "stamped, stained concrete." you can choose from a variety of patterns and colors. The total cost for the floors (breakfast nook, family room, dining room, living room, hallways and closets) and countertops was around $4000.00. We didn't do the bedrooms because I like carpet when my bare feet hit the floor in the morning.

Thank you. We are pretty tickled with them. My wife really likes how easy they are to clean.

I may take you up on that Sunday if you will be around. We are coming out to the range to shoot and I'd like my wife to see them in person as well.

PM me your number as I apparently didn't save it last time.

I'm assuming those were done as an overlay?

For those of you that have concrete countertops, have you had any problems with them discoloring from hot pans being set on them? And do they have to be refinished regularly?

My installer said that hot pans would not be an issue but my wife still puts down pot holders just in case.

They don't need to be refinished but if you scar the polymer finish then you'll need to touch it up so liquids don't get under it.

Yeah it's an overlay or veneer. The contractors put the color into the concrete while it's mixing and then put about a 1/4" veneer down over the existing slab. Then press the rubber forms onto the concrete as it's setting up. After it's cured they put a antique stain on and then a polymer finish.

                              Btw, pm sent.

I've helped two buddy's make the forms and install theirs. Never looked into getting a contractor
