Get it under control. I have barretts esophogus because I didn't. I tried diet changes, extreme diet changes, every prescription pill, and every over the counter med available. Finally found dexilant and its worked for more than 3 months.

they will likely want to do a barium swallow on ya. Basically you stand on the footboard of an upright table and drink a thick chalky drink and the radiologist will watch it under x-ray as it goes down your esophagus into your stomach. If you have gerd, it will also come back into the esophagus. Very simple non-invasive test.

some facilities will call it an esophagram

Yep, Gerd/ Acid Reflux is nothing to mess with. I had been on all the over the counter things, Nexium, Aciphex, and Protonix, it had gotten to the point that I was taking the Protonix 2 times a day and it still was touching the "flames". I went to a Thoracic (sp) Surgeon over a Scott & White in Temple, he recomended an operation called a "Nissen Fundoplication". Basically, they take the top portion of your stomach and wrap it around the lower part of your esophogus.....reinforcing the the LES valve. After a moderate recovery eating soft foods....no more reflux at all. I had the operation going on 3 years ago and I can honestly say I haven't so much as even chewed a Tums since. I can now eat what ever I want...spicy, fried or whatever with no problems.

The only things I have to be careful of are food that produce alot of gas.....I can no longer burp but man I can FART with the best of them.
