EFI is definitely for the diesel junky. A lot of those sites i.e. dieselplace have guys that have written software codes that people can use. It just depends on what you want to achieve. I'm not savvy enough to really do that type of tweaking that EFI allows you to do so I just stuck with my Quadzilla.

not to hijack but I just bought a 2011 Dodge 3500 dually and am thinking of doing an EGR/DPF delete with a H and S Black Maxx and MBRP 5" turbo back but should I wait for my warranty to expire? I am a little annoyed with lack of power and fuel economy right now but I just hit the 1000 mile mark. If someone who is in the know of how everything works with diesel performance can pm me I could really use some advice.

My brother (Zac on TBH) recently bought efi live and installed it on mine, his and my dad's LMM duramax trucks.
It's like no tuner I've used before, including hypertech, quadzilla and edge. He put in a selector switch so that you can change tunes on the fly. The possibilities are endless, but a couple options we are using are a tow tune which uses turbo braking and a smoke tune which is used for some deserving idiot next to you.
We did egr blocker plates and pcv re routes as well. I'm sure he could give you more info about it.

thanks for the info guys....i may look into the prewritten efi tunes with the switch...i dont plan on doing any racing or anything...just maybe some economy tunes, towing...mine is an 06 lbz and warranty just expired...i was waiting for that until i touched it...i will most likely do a egr delete, pcv re route, mbrp straight pipe...ive thought about the transgo jr kit also, but if i dont run any heavy tunes not sure that i will need it...also need to recruit someone to help me with all this

Ben sent me a link to this thread so I will share my 2 cents on the subject.
First off you will NOT get a better tuning option than EFILive. Like stated above the possibilities are literally endless. If you aren't a "junky" as some of you have referred to it you still have a few options instead of buying the $800 software. You can get a pretuned ECM(your truck will be down for a few days while the ECM is shipped, tuned, and shipped back) or have a shop, or someone like myself get the tunes and due all the installation for you. With a pretuned ECM you will still have to install your dsp switch(if you want on the fly switchable tunes) and an EGR blocker plate. I am not a shop but I have done several of these as Ben mentioned, I can get the tunes from Nick(duramaxtuner.com) or any of several other tuners so you know the tunes will be safe. I decided to just start doing all of our aftermarket stuff because we didn't have a shop anywhere near us that would do this sort of thing and I guess you could consider me a performance junky.
Like Ben said pre-2008 trucks don't need an exhaust as bad as the newer models but eliminating the catalytic converter will help gas mileage. EGR blocker plate is a must with any aftermarket tuning.
As far as the duramax warranty goes we have put over 150k+ miles on LMM's(with this type of tuning) and counting without ever needing any warranty work done. I can't speak for the Cummins but we are having no problems whatsoever with voiding our warranties. I would use a little more caution with a Cummins for several reasons but since that usually gets into a heated debate I will leave that alone.
If you do decide you would rather have a handheld tuner let me know as I'm trying to get rid of our old tuners. One of them will fit your 06 and it is the best out of the box tuner we have used. It doesn't compare to EFILive as far as I'm concerned but you will see an improvement over stock. I'm now subscribed to this thread and always up for more questions...
