Got 2 sporterized military Firearms that are my "GO-TO" rifles:
      1) 1903A3/30-06 with 165Gr = 1/2" groups at 100 yards
      2) Mosin Nagant M44 very lethal. 4 shots = 4 Dead hogs.

Started building rifles in the mid 60's,using long and short mauser actions and 03 springfields. They cost about 15-20$ back then. Have built over 200 in more cal. than I can remember. Still have about 12 I built for myself. They are great rifles when built right.

Mosin Nagant 91/30. Russian made 1923. Under $100. Cheap surplus ammo. 440 rounds for ~$85.

                102yr old Carl Gustaff M96 Swedish mauser 6.5 x 55 swedish.
Shot 4 whitetails with it in one weekend in 2010 season. Open sights.
Only one of the deer moved after the shot. Got about 15yds.
Great accuracy from a great round shot from a great gun.

Started with a British Enfield .303 bought for $14 from a Gibsons barrel by my grandpa back in the 70's. Did the SKS thing in high school and got bored with it. More recently I had an FFL 03 and was buying Mosin M38's for fun and collecting but the supply dried up. Now my license has expired and I'm only seeing the long guns and a few M44's anyway. The M38 was great because of the shorter length and not having to mess around with bayonet hardware. It made for a great little sporter or scout rifle and throws enough fire to turn heads at the range

So many good choices (I'm lucky to have these)

                    1898 Krag (30-40 Krag)
                    1903 Springfield (30-06)
                    1917 Enfield (30-06)
                    03A3 Springfield (30-06)
                    M1 Garand (x2) (30-06)
                    M1 Carbine (.30)

Have a Springfield 03-A3. When dad gave it to me years ago the "tube" was shot out. I had a 270 tube put on it as well as a timney trigger and it shoots pretty darn good with just plain ole grey box winchester sp 130grn. My dad made the stock for it years ago and it definately shows it's wear. I need to have that piece of wood redone. Haven't hunted with it in a few years but this year she will be the first one in the truck. Time to bring her back out.

I used a 30-40 Krag when I was a kid in Pa. One hell of a hard hitter!

                          Military Rifles

I've took my A3-03 to the field a couple times, nice grouping for .06 for 100+ yards, would take it to STx for 200+ yard shots...but a little heavy to carry around. take my 3030 for -100.

OT - I've seen where Gun shops are "Restoreing" old military rifles and resaling them 1K+ There's one off 183 in Austin, have the same A303 I have, has it listed for $1000.00 I asked if they wanted to buy mine at that price, he just kinda laughed and said no, he had too many of them as it was...

I have had several 'shooters' wanting to buy them off me for the barrels, apparently as heavy made as they are, they make great competition rifles. At least can take the heat of multiple shots during tournaments.
