How do you light the smoker?

I need some ideas on how to light the wood in the fire box of my smoker. It is just the small patio smokers like you get at Academy. I have been using charcoal but would like to find another way. Maybe some type of homeade torch or something?

I use one of those charcoal chimmneys to get the first batch going, dump that in the firebox and add from there.

Get the bag of big chunks of mesquite from the store and use it just like charcoal. A little liquid firestarter will get it going.

Thats the way to do it.... Been doing it that way for a while now, no more waiting for all your wood to light, light the torch and 15-20 minutes later you have your fire at cooking temperatures...

As soon as I get time I am adding a Gas rod in the bottom of my firebox...

Don't know if this would work for your set up but this is what I put in my firebox. I can just put the split logs in and fire it up. No more starting with tinder and building the fire up.

I have been using the fire starter sticks you can get anywhere. Break one in half, bury in the coals, light and walk away. 20ish min later you are cooking..
