What's your child like to do?

Is the force of gravity constant?

Drop different weights from the roof and time their reaching the ground. Fit into the gravity equation. Drop an arrow and shoot and arrow level and show they hit the ground at the same time.

For my 5th grade science fair 23 years ago I built a working hydroelectric power station. Plywood box built into a "V" shape, painted it green like hills and put some trees on it. The middle was a trough, I could pour water into and it flowed across an electric motor that powered a light bulb. Motor is built from a nail wrapped in a LOT of wire, brushes made from stranded wire fanned out. Fun project I'll never forget it!

          Viscosity:
Tilt a chunk of plywood at a 45 angle and make separate lanes. Pour cooking oil down one lane, mud down another, syrup, peanut butter, etc... explain why each moves as fast or slow as it does.

          Friction:
Start out the same as above but use a lesser angle on the board. Smear each substance on a lane and roll a marble down each lane. Explain how friction effects speed.

Thanks guys. I think he's gonna do something with his bow, and some arrows with different broadheads on them to figure out how the different weights, and diameters will effect the penetration on a target.

Build a Spirometer. Let him measure lung capacity of smokers vs. nonsmokers. Elderly vs. young. Athletes vs. non athletic. May teach him and other kiddos not to smoke and the importance of exercise. Very easy to build, with plastic pvc inside of a larger piece of pvc pipe, then plastic strawlike tubing to blow into. Glue on end cap. Add measuring numbers with black marker and water. Probably win science fair if you write it up emphasizing the conclusion "Don't smoke" etc. GOOD LUCK!

Methods of seed dispersal with wild plants--birds, burrs, milkweed down, etc.

This is the perfect time!... Do a local water quality check by searching for Macro invertebrates. I got a 500 dollar grant from my highschool when I turned in my abstract. If you have any questions call me. you just need to visit a creek, river, or lake.... and you can fish a little while searching for them.
