What grows good in shady areas. I have two big oaks that I can't trim and really don't want to. I get afternoon sun on the area though. Any ideas for shady areas?

I have had fescue and st. augustine both do well in shady areas.

I found a mIxture of fescue and ryegrass from Pennington seed at Walmart. Supposed to grow quick and creep to fill. It was only $17.50 for 20 lbs and is supposed to cover 5,000 sq. feet. I couldn't resist at that price. If it works, great- I'll get more! If it doesn't, I'll try a plan 'B' and look into some sod in a patchwork.

Thanks to Manwitaplan, for the tip on that place over in Medina! I'll look into it. Do you know that guy personally, or have you just dealt with him before?

Bermuda for sun, st.aug for shade, and if you decide to checker board do your self a favor and fill in between each checker or you'll be mowing an off road course!

Watering once a week will work but you need to water it long enough to get the water into the soil. Meaning, water long wnough to get a good 1/2" to 1" of water. When you water place a one end opened can out where the sprikler will hit the opening in the can. This will gauge to you how much water you are getting into the yard. I would bet you will need to water at least an hour or more to get enough water to the roots of the grass.
A good soaking watering, sun and fertilizer will get your grass growing.
