    Dog food warning

I've been living on a very tight income level since moving back home.I cut some cost by buying my dogs food at Dollar General, the store brand -DG's Beefy Gravy in the yellow bag, what a mistake!
Kelli, the Archery Rottweiler is very sick due to me feeding her this food.It appears that she has Kidney Stones developing and is pissing blood, the vet told me yesterday, that her PH in her urine level has gone thru the roof, due to the dogfood shes been eaten the last few monthes. It costs me $218 yesterday at the vet,and the test results will not be back til tomorrow,i'm hoping that she don't need surgery to remove the stones...
I just called DG's customer service, and all they will do is give me my $5.50 back on the last bag i purchased.
Please be careful what yall are feeding yur dogs, cheap dog food can get real exspensive ,real quick.
Anyone else exiperence the same problem?

I'm not a vet but I would think kidney stones would take longer than a few bags of food to develop. It may have expedited the problem, but they've probably been developing over time.

      Sorry to hear it...either way

Was Dollar General Beefy Gravy on the recall list? If it was, it shouldn't have been on the shelf and you may actually have a case against Dollar General.

Here is some information about the cause of renal failure in pets after consuming recalled food: "Melamine was identified as a potential toxin, even though it is not extremely toxic by itself. Cyanuric acid was identified as an additional toxin. Cyanuric acid is used as a chlorine stabilizer in pools and hot tubs, and according to the FDA, it may be added to certain animal feeds in accordance to regulations. How did these two chemicals cause so many deaths and illnesses in pets worldwide? From the start, researchers knew that the kidneys were affected -- suffering damage from crystal formation. Until recently, no one knew how those crystals were formed. A breakthrough came from a lab at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, when the two chemicals were mixed together in a test tube at the ph level of an animal kidney. Crystals formed immediately. The person who discovered the reaction was scientist Perry Martos. "If you can imagine an instantaneous kidney stone — that's essentially the way I would perceive it," says Martos. "

Dog food is a hot button topic with me...in more ways than one. I used to sell dog and cat food.

Muenster Natural. Local, and good stuff...well worth the price. Buy from Behrings in Houston, and they drop ship for free. Supplement w/Lamaderm from wally world, but doesn't work as well as the Muenster.

Nutro Ultra is one of the best commercial foods available.
The other Nutro lines are ok, but contain insufficient meat products, fat of unidentifiable origin, and a lot of fillers.

I feed Pedigree from TSC. $17 for a 52 pound bag. $0.33/pound vs 0.28 for the cheap stuff.

I had a yellow lab golden retriever cross many years ago. It developed kidney stones and the doctor had me change the food I was feeding it.

You can actually feed them less with a quality dog food because they are getting what they need with less quantity, plus it really reduces the mess in the yard.

Sika, what are your feed recommendations for a cocker spaniel, ****zu, and toy poodle? The ****z and toy don't have good tooths anymore. BTW, these are not my dogs but they are pampered more than I was by my parents. I think they use something like Science Diet from the vet, is that OK or just a money maker for the vet?

Yes; calorie density makes premium dog food cost-effective.
