Bowfishin folks......I learned how to run a troller with a genny

Just passin this along to help yall out. You can buy an rv converter rated with enough amps to run your trolling motor and a marine battery to get setup. Plug the converter into your genny, run positive and negative wires from the converter to your battery then your battery to your troller. Your troller will run all night! Brands of converters are iota, power max and a couple others. Just do a search on ebay or amazon. Hope this helps! Aim low...

thats how i run mine, works great! only problem ive had with the setup was i burned up my speed switch on the trolling motor (i know, not related to the converter). only costed me about $20 to replace though.

Can you just run the converter to the troller?

yes, but if the generator dies, you have no steering or brakes

I've got to look into this. My trolling motor will only run about 5hrs before going dead.

Yea, I got tired of having to carry extra batteries. I also hate when my night is goin great and then is cut short by a dead battery. Supposedly the converter with act as an alternater type and keep the battery charged to full capacity no matter how hard you run your troller and the genny has gas.

i could be wrong, but i understood it to not be a good thing to do this. i thought the battery acted as a "buffer". if the converter happened to lose it's calibration and started putting out too much power, the battery would prevent it from frying your trolling motor. i could be completely wrong though. i just run it through the battery every time.

So could the converter be used (switched over) to the dedicated cranking battery for the big motor in the case it dies while your on the lake in the middle of the night???

                    Like what happened tonight

One question, by the time you buy a trolling motor, 2 high dollar marine batterys and an inverter you could have easily purchased a motor and prop to build a fan. Just a thought guys, its not rocket science to build them either. Ive only had one troller boat but I ended up with more in it than I did my second fan build.

True dat, but there's a lot of lakes in Texas now sporting restrictions on fanboats and airboats. Seems noise makes lakeside residents mad in the dead of night when us bowfishermen are having fun......

That's why our current boat build will stay with a trolling motor. That, and we have access to airboats as well.....

I've looked into inverters, and most folks that run 'em seem to like Iotas. Since we don't plan to run our trolling motor boat more than a couple of hours at most, we won't go there just yet.

We have been doing that for about 5 years be sure to get an adjustable on and set the output where it is at the proper voltage at the troller run it thru the battries so it wont burn up the unit full power all night.

Guy on ebay sells the 12/24/36 v

True, I opt to skip those lakes with the exception of Falcon. Guess I'm lazy

NO, bad idea you will fry everything. People have been trying to figure out how to run a genny to a troller and no one has been able to figure it out. I think the battery acts as a buffer and keeps it from frying your motor.
