Google Updater - Computer experts question

I'm making an assumption that this was installed on my computer when I installed Google Earth. My wife uninstalled Google Earth from her PC and it immediately sped up. Can any of you computer experts give any insight?

Not an expert but google earth occupies alot of memory. Free up the memory and the computer speed increases.

Terry is there anyway to disable Google Earth to see the effects before I uninstall it?

      Thanks for your reply.

google earth tries to install the google toolbar and such on your PC. its a type of "spyware" in that it watches what you search for, points you to its favorites and even tries to take over the "explorer" part of your OS for searching on your PC to "speed it up". i dont like it.

I removed it from my computer but it doesn't seem to have helped. Thanks Tommy.

Google Earth should be using no resources unless it is running. Removing should add no speed unless you are comparing it to the speed you had before while the program was open in the background.

Bill, if you do a cntrl-alt-del, then go to task manager, you should be able to see if the application is running, or any processes. If google earth were running and consuming computer resources, I think you'd see it in applications, and the processes it runs also.

Look at the free space on your wife's hard disk by right clicking on the icon and looking at properties. If it's over 70% full, she may see an increase in speed by deleting a large program.

                  My 2 ideas.

                    • Click the Start button
                    • Click Run
                    • Type in msconfig and press Enter or OK
                    • In the window that opens, click the Startup Tab
                    • Uncheck any programs you don't want or don't recognize
                    • click OK and reboot computer

If you happen to clear a program that it turns out you need/want, just repeat the above and recheck said program.

Death Whisper, how does one decide which program, which you know nothing about or never heard of, you don't want running on startup? For example, on my work laptop,

Size:	67.9 KB

BTW, ERASER which you can download for free on downloads.com lets you not only delete a file in the recycling bin, but actually write-over it so somebody with Norton Utilities can't recover it. Great for bow and duck hunting projects on the work laptop!

Google them and you should find answers to what each program does.

I have about half of the programs in startup disabled right now using that method.

Sorry, missed this thread upon return... Sully's right, Google anything you're not sure of. I'd also say remove the check mark next to anything with a blank entry.
