Anyone else do the same day set up with their pop ups? With the acorns raining down, I am gonna try hunting some trails and just wanted to see if anyone sets up their pop up and hunts out of them the same day. Any tips or tricks?
I set up some new pop-ups Saturday, put cameras on them, and pulled the cards Sunday. Had does on camera Saturday afternoon looking at the new popups but they all settled right down and went to feeding.
I am going to give it a try this week-end hope it works out. I have had shoulder surgery on my left one. So when I pull the bow back it looks bad with all the movement I have to do to draw the thing. But I can do it. so I will know how it work and get back to.
Movement is also my problem. Combine ADD with some camp coffee and its a recipe for disaster when you are hunting. I think not being able to sit still is what gets me busted 85% of the time. I bring books an iPod, doesnt matter, sitting still is hard for me. My best luck comes when I hunt out of box blinds or my Double Bull. Really want to get good at same day set ups because I cringe at leaving a blind that costs that much out all the time.
The easy answer is always brush in big time, however if the deer can see the blind from a long way off and not as Madeen would say Boom there it is they are less concerned. I have had luck on first day set ups. If you decide to brush in on a first day set up, don't cut brush from the immediate area.
I shot this buck last year 30 minutes after I had my pop set up on a one day invite to hunt. Just put it under some low hanging branches and a cut a couple of shooting holes. I just picked a spot that looked good and hoped for the best. No corn, no nothing.
I was about to post the same thing. I think breaking up the outline of the top of a pop up is the most important thing. The rule of thumb I have always used was taught to me by my friend Deerslayer, " When you are down brushing it in, step back and look, you are only half way done."
