    does a mechanic jinx ya

I have never been real good about servicing my vehicles. oil changes usually get done 1 time a year, and transmissions get service when they break and my vehicles have always done me pretty good. Although they suffer from neglect they just keep plugging away with out complaint for well over 100k. Well since my wife got a new car 6 months ago I have been driving her old vehicle. I finally decided last week to have the plugs changed and transmission service done for the first time since new 179k miles ago. and guess what just happened? You guessed it, the transmission just dumped out its entire fluid content on my driveway. The shop is coming to get it but it just irritates me that I know if I had not had this work done it would be out side waiting for me to take it on another road trip with out complaint.
I'm convinced that if I try and take care of a vehicle, the worse off I am.
    Is it just me?

gotta ask yourself....have you ever heard of a tranny that wasn't serviced spilling it's guts out like that?

I haven't....maybe leaking from old age and hard/brittle seals...transx and others can sometimes cure that....but if there were no issues and someone touched it and it broke....you musta been hotrodding it eh...

I drive it, til it breaks or the tires fall off. All I do is change the oil. I drive a 98 dodge and even though it looks like a beater it gets me where I need to go. I am fixing to get a new truck, my boyfriend wants mine as a ranch truck...I think its his way of getting me to agree to a new vehicle since I'm such a cheap ***.

So you blame the transmssion on your bad maintanence and general lack of knowledge?

Keep up with your vehicle and it will last well over 100K miles.

I think you are right though: "I'm convinced that if I try and take care of a vehicle, the worse off I am."

I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule. So far (knocking on wood) it's worked well. One day I'll figure out how much money it has saved me over the years.

Please do not take this wrong, But as an airplane man, I am suprized that you do not believe in maintanance. But, 179k is not bad for even for trannys that are maintained. Hope the shop takes care of ya well

If they did the tranny flush on it, they pressurized the system and those old seals couldn't take the pressure. They say if you don't do it semi regular, don't do it at all.

Plus, the newer tranny fluids have a lot of detergent that will eat seals that aren't use to it.

What Dale said. My mechanic once told me that if you don't regularly service a tranny, you're better off not doing it, or changing the filter (if there is one) and putting the old fluid back in it. New fluid has fresh detergents and more viscosity than the old burned stuff. Putting the new fluid in an old tranny that hasn't seen service is asking for problems, if there aren't any in the first place.

Dang! once again, I wish I had know this last week I do trust this shop, they once told me that there was nothing wrong with this same vehicle after my wife got a quote for 1300 in parts and labor from another shop. He was right, I drove it another 90k before this slight set back popped up. I believe it will be fixed

Just for grins...how bout puttin the wife's new rig on a tranny flush every year, and 2 oil changes.........it may never quit!

I don't know how you let the oil go that long. These new oils/filters/engines/etc are way better than the old ones.......but I could never do that. I depend on my rig too much.

Well the oil did get changed every 3k when she drove it. I did it about every 5-7k so the oil thing was good. Just all the other stuff was neglected.
and she will be doing the tranny flush every year now for sure
