    Fly Fishing Southeast NM?

Anyone know any good spots around Cloudcroft or Ruidoso, New Mexico? Perhaps Southeast, New Mexico in general? Thanks

Not much water in Southeast NM. Ruidoso on the other hand has a river that runs right through town that I heard is decent.

I've only fished Navajo Dams in NW NM (great fishing, btw). I don't have any info for you, but I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for the same info. Best of luck!

Trout? Ruidoso has quite a bit of good trout fishing, most I've done has been in higher mountain lakes - mostly private though.

Rio Penasco out near Mayhill is real good I hear. Very technical demanding tiny midges and perfect presentations. Search for Mulcock Ranch.

I hear there is good fishing on the reservation outside Ruidoso. Not sure what the season or fees are.

The lake by Inn of the Mountain Gods maybe? Good gambling and cold ones are close by.

don't know for sure, but you might research the pecos river. I know the upper pecos and its tributaries offer good fishing for cutthroats, browns and rainbows.

I'm just not sure how far south the browns and rainbows go down the river..

I worked on the intial development out on sonterra and we would hike along the rio bonito and catch brookies out of the river. That was in the mid 90's. You can go up to bonito and hike the river on both ends and try your luck. You will need some sort of map to keep yourself legal. I would stop in at the forest service office and get a map and ask a few questions. Also stop by the visitor center in Ruidoso and see if they can give you any resource that may help you. There used to be a fly shop in Ruidoso if it is still there stop in.

I dont think the fly shop is still there. I looked for it last time I visited. I have pretty much every lake and stream in the area. The lake at the INN of the Mountain Gods is probably the best bet, two others are Bonito lake which has a stream near by and Grindstone lake used to be good. The rio ruidoso stream in town can be good in spots if it has been stocked......drought hits it hard. The stream up by bonito is good fly fishing in spots. I think you have to get a guide to fish the Rio Penasco on the Mulcock...not positive though. I know there is a fly fishing club you can join to fish the Penasco. Good Luck!

^This. Charlie Mulcock's place is pretty good fishing. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but as far as I know it's still good. It used to cost $10/day to fish his ranch. Not sure what he charges now.

Hmmmm.... looks like Charlie leased his place to a fly fishing club. http://www.mulcockranch.com/Mulcock_...t_Fishing.html

I don't know if you can get on now or not.

The Pecos river between Roswell and Hagerman has some good holes for bass and panfish.
