IMO the metal in a leaf spring is not hard enough to get razor sharp and keep the edge. How hard a piece of metal is determines how really sharp it will get and keep an edge.

For example: I had a custom knife made recently and I specified that the metal be 4-40 Stainless Steel, and that the blade be cryo hardended to a hardness of 61 on the Rockwell scale. It was razor sharp when I fot it. I was informed that this knife will stay sharp even after skinning 8 deer. I believe it because I skinned four deer with it and the knife is still razor sharp. Hope this helps. God bless.

For ease of use and learnability you can't beat a spyderco sharp maker. I get blades sharp enough to split hairs lengthwise. Normally I use dmt diamond hone plates, but the sharp maker is my quickie go to

With a torch and oil you can temper a leaf spring.

I've tried ceramic sticks and a standard stone. What I need to know is if someone is willing to try to put an edge on this.

Try a Lansky or some other sharpener that has a foolproof way of holding a consistent angle. It makes a huge difference.

A lansky can bring anything to an evil edge. The metal holds or loses it due to the hardness............

OK, is anyone willing to try to put an edge on this knife? If so send me a PM with your address and I will ship it to you with a check for return postage.

Call John Fitzen at Razors Edge. He primarily uses spring steel in his knives and can give you some info or sharpen it for you.

All I use is wet stones but I would give it a try if you don't get someone with a Lansky to try it.

I've got several made out of leaf springs from a fellow named Conlin. Mine get razor sharp with a wet stone and strop. He did say that the secrete to his knives are how they temper them. Mine are hard to look at but they are cheap, durable, and do a good job on critters.
